Lions Close Fall with Fifth-Place Finish at Region V Showcase

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Penn State Altoona men's golf team ended the fall portion of its 2023-24 season on a high note Tuesday, when the Lions wrapped up the two-day NCAA Region V Showcase at the Warren Golf Course at Notre Dame.

After shooting 314 as a team in Monday's round on the par 71 course, the Lions shaved nine strokes off of their total during Tuesday's action, compiling a team score of 305 to climb three spots on the team leaderboard and finish in fifth place out of 16 squads with a two-day score of 619.

The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology won the Showcase with a combined score of 585. Otterbein University was the runner-up with 602, and Trine University placed third with 611.

Jack DiTrani (Hinsdale, IL/Benet Academy) shot Penn State Altoona's low score on the day, shooting 1-over par, 72, to record a two-round score of 153, tying for 12th place individually out of 95 golfers. Peter Nusbaum (Pittsboro, NC/Thales Academy) was the Lions' top finisher in the tournament, tying for sixth place individually after firing 77 on Tuesday to compile a two-day score of 151.

Trey Heffelfinger (Mount Union, PA/Mount Union) carded 79 in round two, tying for 39th place on the player leaderboard with a two-day score of 160. Jack Ankeny (Davidsville, PA/Conemaugh Township) matched his season-low score, shooting 77 on Tuesday and finishing with a two-round score of 162 to tie for 46th place. Andrew Bruce (Moon Township, PA/Moon) scored an 86 on Tuesday, tying for 54th place with a total of 164.

Meanwhile, Penn State Altoona's 'B' team moved up one spot to finish in 14th place. The 'B' squad shot 337 on Tuesday, totaling 677 in the tournament.

Maxwell Samangy (Crafton, PA/Carlynton) fired a season-best 76 in Tuesday's round, tying for 32nd place individually with a two-day score of 158. Daniel Batrus (Altoona, PA/Altoona) shot 84 in round two to total 173, and Sean McCullough (Kittanning, PA/West Shamokin) carded an 87 on Tuesday to finish with a combined score of 167.

Michael Gloth (Glenwood, MD/Glenelg) shot 90 in Tuesday's round, recording a two-round score of 183. Anthony Carson (Broomall, PA/Cardinal O'Hara) scored a 92 to compile a two-day score of 181.

Among Penn State Altoona's trio of individuals, Ethan Ellis (Pittsburgh, PA/North Catholic) led the way after shooting 80 on Tuesday and finishing with a two-day score of 167. Stephen Phillips (Gambrills, MD/DeMatha Catholic) carded an 83 in round two, compiling a total score of 168. Trent Querry (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) matched his first-round score by shooting 88 on Tuesday and finishing with a total score of 176.

Next, the Penn State Altoona men's golf team will break from intercollegiate competition until the spring semester. The Lions will resume regular season play on Friday, March 29 and Saturday, March 30, when the team will host the annual Penn State Division III Challenge at the Penn State Blue and White Courses in State College.
