Men’s Golf Has Historic Day in Second-Place Finish at Palmer Cup

SEWICKLEY, Pa. – Penn State Altoona men's golf made program history during the second and final day of the Win Palmer Cup on Tuesday, as the Lions ascended the standings to finish in second place out of six squads in the tournament, which was hosted by Wittenberg University at Allegheny Country Club.

As a team, Penn State Altoona shot a program-record 288 in Tuesday's round on the par 70 course. That scoring total edged the Lions' previous record of 289, which was set on September 5, 2021, during the Gatorade Collegiate at Zoar Village Golf Course in Dover, Ohio.

The Lions also saw an historic performance by an individual, as sophomore Peter Nusbaum (Pittsboro, NC/Thales Academy) tied Penn State Altoona's all-time low score by shooting 67 in Tuesday's round in the Palmer Cup. Teammate Trey Heffelfinger (Mount Union, PA/Mount Union) is the only other golfer in team history to shoot 67 in a round.

Host school Wittenberg won the two-day Palmer Cup with a combined score of 553, and Penn State Altoona took runner-up status with a two-round score of 586.

Washington & Jefferson College tied with Westminster College for third place, as each school shot 588 across two days. Allegheny College was fifth with 595, and Wittenberg's 'B' team came in sixth with 597.

Nusbaum finished the tournament tied for fifth place out of 36 individuals, after his 3-under score on Tuesday gave him a two-day total of 141. Jack DiTrani (Hinsdale, IL/Benet Academy) tied for 12th place individually, after he shot 4-over par, 74, on Tuesday to compile a two-round score of 146.

Andrew Bruce (Moon Township, PA/Moon) had the Lions' second-best score of Tuesday's round, firing an even-par 70 to finish with a combined score of 147, tying him for 15th place on the player leaderboard. Heffelfinger shot 78 on Tuesday, ending in a tie for 20th place with a total score of 153.

Jack Ankeny (Davidsville, PA/Conemaugh Township) and Stephen Phillips (Gambrills, MD/DeMatha Catholic) each tied for 28th place individually at the tournament's conclusion with matching two-day scores of 157. Ankeny carded 78 in Tuesday's round, while Phillips shot 77.

Penn State Altoona men's golf wraps up its 2023-24 regular season this weekend, when the Lions will travel to the Atlanta, Ga. area to compete in the Emory University Spring Invitational on Saturday, April 20, and Sunday, April 21. The tournament will be played at Cherokee Run Golf Club in Conyers, Ga., with play expected to start at 8 a.m. each day.
