
Titans Outduel Lions for Hite Cup
BEDFORD, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona men's golf team stepped into match play Tuesday afternoon at the Omni Bedford Springs Resort for the 4th Annual Hite Cup match play with Presidents' Athletic Conference rival Westminster College.
The Lions fell to 0-4 in the series, dropping another close match with the Titans, 5-2. Winning matches were junior Peter Nusbaum (Pittsboro, NC/Thales Academy), a 3&2 winner over Ellian Ascencio, and sophomore Trent Querry (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle), a come-from-behind 2 up winner over Peter Canovali.
It was the varsity lineup debut for Querry, who overcame a 5 down deficit after nine holes. Querry birdied three of his final five holes. Protecting a 1 up lead on the final hole, the Lion sophomore knocked his approach shot to six feet and sank the putt to set the final margin at 2 up.
In other matches, sophomore Nicky Riscica (Newtown, PA/Council Rock North) fell to Joe Trudeau, 4&3. Sophomore Andrew Bruce (Moon Township, PA/Moon) rallied from a 3 down deficit to All Square through 17, only to have an 18th hole par bested by a birdie from Gavin Batdorff. Freshman Nicholas Helsley (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) was dropped by Tyler Hager, 4&2, while sophomore Joey Sabol (State College, PA/State College) lost to Kai Haseyama, 3&2. Sophomore Ethan Ellis (Pittsburgh, PA/North Catholic) rounded out the matches with a 3&1 loss to Portland Canovali.
The Lions return to action on Saturday, September 21, at the NCAA Region V Showcase, hosting the event for the third year. First tee time is 8:30 a.m. with the Lions "B" squad followed by the "A" squad at 9:15 a.m. Manakiki Golf Club in Willoughby, Ohio will serve as the host venue for 22 teams from across Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, and Illinois.
