Men’s Golf Holds Sixth in Day One of Region V Showcase

WILLOUGHBY, Ohio – The Penn State Altoona men's golf team opened the two-day NCAA Region V Showcase on Saturday at Manakiki Golf Course, finishing the day in sixth place out of 22 teams.

The Lions shot 310 as a team on the par 72 course, ranking in sixth place by the conclusion of round one. Trine University held down the top spot on the team leaderboard with a score of 288, John Carroll University was in second with 291, and Denison University was third with 304.

Andrew Bruce (Moon Township, PA/Moon) was the Lions' top finisher on the day, firing 2-over par with a 74 to tie for 10th place out of 126 scoring individuals. Nicky Riscica (Newtown, PA/Council Rock North) shot 3-over par, with his score of 75 putting him in a tie for 13th place.

Nicholas Helsley (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) shot 79 to finish the round in a tie for 47th place. Peter Nusbaum (Pittsboro, NC/Thales Academy) and Ethan Ellis (Pittsburgh, PA/North Catholic) finished with respective scores of 82 and 87.

Meanwhile, the Lions' 'B' team compiled a score of 326 to take 17th place on the team leaderboard after day one.

Joey Sabol (State College, PA/State College) had the 'B' squad's top score, shooting a 79 to come in a tie for 47th place individually. Roger Royer (Williamsburg, PA/Williamsburg Community) carded an 81 to tie for 65th place.

Trent Querry (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) and Samuel Sharbaugh (Davidsville, PA/Conemaugh Township) scored matching 83s, and Anthony Carson (Broomall, PA/Cardinal O'Hara) rounded out the 'B' team with an 88.

Penn State Altoona's Jack Ankeny (Davidsville, PA/Conemaugh Township) also competed as an individual, earning an 82 to finish the round in a tie for 72nd place individually.

Penn State Altoona men's golf returns to action tomorrow, Sunday, September 22, for the second and final day of the NCAA Region V Showcase, with the round's first tee times scheduled for approximately 8 a.m.
