
Men’s Golf Takes Fourth in Pennsylvania Classic
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona men's golf team concluded its first home tournament of the spring on Sunday, when it finished in fourth place out of 17 teams at the end of the second and final day of the Pennsylvania Classic at the Penn State Blue Course.
The Lions improved on Saturday's score by seven strokes, shooting 293 as a team in Sunday's round on the par 72 course. Penn State Altoona totaled 593 for the tournament to take fourth place on the team leaderboard.
Allegheny College won the Classic with a two-day score of 581. Washington & Jefferson College was the runner-up with 591, and Westminster College placed third with 592.
Additionally, Penn State Altoona won the Penn State Division III Challenge portion of the tournament, which pitted the participating Penn State Division III teams against each other. Penn State Altoona's two-round score of 593 ranked first, ahead of Penn College (619), Penn State Harrisburg (633), and Penn State Abington (681).
Peter Nusbaum (Pittsboro, NC/Thales Academy) highlighted Sunday's action for Penn State Altoona by shooting 5-under par, firing a 67 that tied for the lowest score in a round in team history. Nusbaum totaled 140 this weekend to tie for the lowest two-day score out of 94 individuals who competed in the tournament. He lost a sudden-death playoff with Allegheny's Carter Hassenplug for the tournament's individual title, with the two players shooting matching scores on the first playoff hole, No. 14, before Hassenplug edged Nusbaum by one shot on the next, No. 18.
Andrew Bruce (Moon Township, PA/Moon) tied for 13th by the end of the tournament, duplicating his day-one score by shooting 2-over again on Sunday and finishing with a combined score of 148. Nicholas Helsley (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) tied for 27th place individually, carding 77 on Sunday and totaling 152 for the tournament.
Daniel Batrus (Altoona, PA/Altoona) tied for 34th place with a two-day score of 154, including his 76 in Sunday's round. Nicky Riscica (Newtown, PA/Council Rock North) rounded out Penn State Altoona's 'A' team by finishing in a tie for 52nd place with 159, including his 76 in today's action.
Penn State Altoona's 'B' team tied for seventh place on the team leaderboard, shooting 307 on Sunday and finishing with a two-day score of 617.
Sean McCullough (Kittanning, PA/West Shamokin) was the top finisher on the 'B' team, tying for 17th place individually with a two-round score of 149, including his 2-over par score, 74, on Sunday. Anthony Carson (Broomall, PA/Cardinal O'Hara) tied for 31st, also shooting a 2-over score of 74 in Sunday's round and totaling 153 in two days.
Jack Ankeny (Davidsville, PA/Conemaugh Township) ended in a tie for 39th place, after he shot 81 in day two and finished with a combined score of 156. Ethan Ellis (Pittsburgh, PA/North Catholic) tied for 62nd place, carding 78 on Sunday to finish with a two-day score of 165. Trent Querry (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) took a tie for 69th place, as he totaled 167 shots in two days, including his score of 86 on Sunday.
Penn State Altoona's two individuals also concluded their weekend in Sunday's round. Maxwell Samangy (Crafton, PA/Carlynton) tied for 62nd with a combined score of 165, including his 84 on Sunday. Luke Repko (Cresson, PA/Bishop Carroll) finished in a tie for 73rd place, after he carded 83 on Sunday and recorded a two-day score of 168.
Next up, Penn State Altoona men's golf will travel to Jacksonville, N.C., next weekend to compete in the 52nd Annual Camp Lejeune Intercollegiate Golf Championship. The three-day event, held from Friday, April 4, through Sunday, April 6, is hosted the Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune at Paradise Point Golf Course. Tee times for each round are to-be-announced.
