Lions in Fifth Through Three Days of AMCC Championships

ERIE, Pa. -- Through the third day of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Swimming Championships at Penn State Behrend on Friday, the Penn State Altoona men's swimming team remained in fifth place.

Penn State Behrend continued to bolster its big lead in first place, finishing Friday's action with 519 points through three days. Cabrini College was in second with 282 points, Pitt-Bradford and Alfred State College each claimed a share of third place with 270 points, and Penn State Altoona rounded out the field with 122 points for fifth place.

For Penn State Altoona, Friday evening's finals were highlighted by a record-setting performance from Tanner Yaw (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra) in the 400 Yard I.M. In the 'B' final of that swim, Yaw finished in 4:38.07 to establish a new Penn State Altoona men's swimming record for that event. Yaw won the 'B' final while placing seventh overall in the event.

Later in the evening, Yaw won another 'B' cut final when he finished atop the 'B' standings in the 100 Yard Butterfly with a time of 55.74, placing seventh overall. In that same swim, teammate Gino Cercone (Allison Park, PA/Shaler) finished in 1:00.07 to come in fifth place in the 'B' final and 11th overall.

The Lions opened Friday's finals session with a fourth place finish in the 200 Yard Medley Relay, as the team of Dominic Woods (Pittsburgh, PA/Brentwood), Tom Weir (Greensburg, PA/Hempfield), Yaw, and Caleb Marasco (Altoona, PA/Altoona) combined for a time of 1:45.76.

In the 200 Yard Freestyle 'B' final, Andrew Lesnett (Middletown, NY/Minisink Valley) finished in 1:52.23 to place fourth in the 'B' group and 10th overall.

Penn State Altoona had three finishers in the 'B' cut final of the 100 Yard Breaststroke. Weir placed third in the 'B' and ninth overall with a time of 1:06.59, Greg Landis (York, PA/West York) followed by coming in fourth in the 'B' and 10th overall with a time of 1:07.63, and Ben McConnell (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) earned a time of 1:10.41 to place fifth in the 'B' and 11th overall.

The Lions wrapped up the evening in the 100 Yard Backstroke 'B' final, during which Woods and Cheongjae Lee (Gwacheon-si Gyeonggi-do, South Korea/St. John's) recorded respective times of 1:05.22 and 1:11.83. Woods was third in the 'B' group and ninth overall, and Lee placed fourth in that group and 10th overall.

The fourth and final day of the AMCC Championships is tomorrow, Saturday, February 17. Preliminaries start the day at 10:00 a.m., and the last finals session of the championships begins at 6:00 p.m. Included in tomorrow's events will be the 200 Yard Backstroke, 100 Yard Freestyle, 200 Yard Breaststroke, and 200 Yard Butterfly.
