
Men’s Swimming Remains Sixth in Day Two at Malone Invite
CANTON, Ohio – The Penn State Altoona men's swimming team continued to hold sixth place out of 14 teams through two days of the Malone University Invitational, which wrapped up its second finals session of the event on Friday night in the Branin Natatorium.
The Lions scored 220 points in Friday's finals, boosting their team score to 374 points through two days. Division II Gannon University ranked atop the team leaderboard with 1,179 points, while Oberlin College was in second place with 774.
Penn State Altoona opened Friday's finals session by taking seventh place in the 200 Yard Medley Relay, in which the team of Eugene Heyman (Boiling Springs, PA/Boiling Springs), Adam Dotts (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin), Hunter McMullen (Colver, PA/Central Cambria), and Rocco Solimeo (Harrisburg, PA/Bishop McDevitt) combined for a time of 1:37.99.
Next, Shuo Sun (Falls Church, VA/China High Schools) won the 'B' final in the 200 Yard Freestyle, placing ninth in the overall standings with a time of 1:45.23. Nick Trabucco (Carlisle, PA/Boiling Springs) competed in the 'C' final of the same swim, placing 21st overall after finishing in 1:51.95.
Caden Traggiai (Sarver, PA/Knoch) qualified for the 'A' final of the 400 Yard IM and came in eighth place with a time of 4:25.85.
Three Lions competed in finals for the next event, the 100 Yard Butterfly. McMullen put together a record-setting performance after he made the cut to swim in the 'A' final, placing seventh with a time of 51.68. His time set a new Penn State Altoona men's swimming team record for the 100 Yard Butterfly, topping the previous record of 52.87, which was set by former Lion Zachary Jones on February 13, 2015.
Later in the 100 Yard Butterfly, Benjamin Dotts (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) qualified for the 'B' final, and he took 15th place overall after finishing in 54.22. Lincoln Johnson (Huntingtown, MD/Huntingtown) made the 'C' final and came in 19th place overall with a time of 55.69.
In the 100 Yard Breaststroke, Adam Dotts swam in the 'B' final, where he secured a 15th-place finish with a time of 1:02.68. Brian Nguyen (Lancaster, PA/Manheim Township) competed in the 'C' final, winning that group and placing 17th overall after clocking in at 1:03.49.
Heyman qualified for the 'B' final in the 100 Yard Backstroke, earning 15th place with a time of 55.99.
Penn State Altoona finished the night with its best relay finish of the week, as the squad of Traggiai, Sun, Trabucco, and Adam Dotts came together to place third in the 800 Yard Freestyle Relay with a total time of 7:17.87.
The Lions will head into the third and final day of the Malone Invitational tomorrow, Saturday, November 23. The round of preliminaries is set to start at 10 a.m., with the invitational's last finals session scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.
