Singles Wins Push Lions Past Bearcats, 5-4

ALTOONA, Pa. – Penn State Altoona men's tennis recorded its second win of the season on Wednesday night, when the Lions earned a close victory over non-conference opponent Saint Vincent College at the Gorilla House Gym.

Penn State Altoona (2-1) trailed after doubles play, but the Lions won four out of six singles matches to come back and defeat St. Vincent (2-3) by one.

The Bearcats got their night off to a strong start, posting an 8-1 victory in the No. 2 doubles match and pulling out an 8-7 (7-1) win in the No. 3 doubles spot. Penn State Altoona salvaged a point from doubles in the No. 1 match, where the duo of Joey Toth (South Park, PA/South Park)/Casey Hess (Annville, PA/Annville-Cleona) recorded an 8-3 victory for their first win together this season.

Penn State Altoona was able to overcome its deficit in singles play, reeling off four wins to come from behind and claim victory in the overall match.

Toth picked up his first singles win of the season in the No. 1 slot, coming out on top of a back-and-forth match by a 4-6, 6-1, 10-7 decision over his opponent. Hess handled his foe 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 2 singles match for his second win of the season, and Nick Beard (Manns Choice, PA/Bedford) notched his second victory of the season with a comfortable 6-2, 6-0 triumph in the No. 3 match. Javier Pozo (Peru/The Southern Cross School) provided the winning point for Penn State Altoona in the No. 6 match, where he recorded his first collegiate win with a 6-2, 6-2 victory.

Next, Penn State Altoona men's tennis returns to action this upcoming weekend. The Lions' scheduled road match against non-conference opponent Grove City College, which was to take place on Saturday, March 18, was postponed today due to the forecast of cold temperatures and high wind. With the postponement, Penn State Altoona's next match will be against Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Pitt-Greensburg on Sunday, March 19 at 2 p.m.
