Men’s Tennis Starts Season with Home Win

ALTOONA, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona men's tennis team began its 2024-25 season with a victory, as the Lions defeated non-conference opponent Thiel College 7-0 at the Adler Tennis Courts on Monday evening.

Playing in the first of its five-date fall portion of the schedule, Penn State Altoona (1-0) posted a dominant performance over the visiting Tomcats (0-1). The Lions took two out of three in doubles to nab the match's opening point, then won all six singles matches to blank Thiel, 7-0.

Thiel won the No. 1 doubles match, but Penn State Altoona secured victories in the No. 2 and No. 3 spots to win the doubles point. In the No. 2 doubles match, the duo of Emmett Hibbs (Richfield, PA/East Juniata)/Gabriel Lopez (Wilmette, IL/New Trier Township) prevailed 6-2, with the win representing the first of Lopez's collegiate career. Penn State Altoona won the No. 3 doubles match by a forfeit, and the Lions headed into singles play with an early lead.

Penn State Altoona proceeded win all of the singles matches to tack six more points on to its total. In the No. 1 match, Casey Hess (Annville, PA/Annville-Cleona) whitewashed his opponent 6-0, 6-0, and Andrew Chronister (York, PA/Dallastown) earned a 6-4, 6-0 triumph in the No. 2 spot. Nick Beard (Manns Choice, PA/Bedford) and Jackson Newell (Leechburg, PA/Kiski Area) also recorded commanding wins by 6-0, 6-0 decisions in the No. 3 and No. 4 matches, respectively.

Thiel forfeited the No. 5 and No. 6 singles matches, and Penn State Altoona finished the day with a seven-point victory over the Tomcats.

Penn State Altoona men's tennis gets right back to action at home tomorrow, Tuesday, October 8, when the Lions host non-conference foe Geneva College at 4:30 p.m.
