
Lions Breeze Past Golden Tornadoes, 6-1
ALTOONA, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona men's tennis team hosted its second match in as many days on Tuesday afternoon, when the Lions defeated non-conference opponent Geneva College 6-1 at the Adler Tennis Courts.
The Lions (2-0) posted their second victory of their season-opening week by winning all three doubles matches for the first point, then taking five out of six in singles play to finish with a comfortable five-point decision over Geneva (1-2).
Penn State Altoona scored the match's first point in doubles, where all three of the Lions' teams notched wins. In the No. 1 match, the pair of Andrew Chronister (York, PA/Dallastown)/Casey Hess (Annville, PA/Annville-Cleona) pulled out a 7-5 victory, followed by a 6-1 win from the duo of Nick Beard (Manns Choice, PA/Bedford)/Gabriel Lopez (Wilmett, IL/New Trier Township) in the No. 2 spot. Kadyn Carey (Altoona, PA/Altoona)/Jackson Newell (Leechburg, PA/Kiski Area) prevailed 6-2 in the No. 3 doubles match.
Geneva got on the board in the No. 1 singles match, but Penn State Altoona rattled off wins in the next five to defeat the Golden Tornadoes by five points on the day. Chronister recorded a 6-3, 6-1 triumph in the No. 2 singles match, and Beard earned a 6-3, 6-3 decision over his opponent at No. 3. Newell won 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 4 spot, and Carey pulled out a tiebreak win at No. 5, 6-3, 4-6, 10-6. Wilhelm Grot (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone) defeated his opponent 6-3, 6-4 in the No. 6 match.
Penn State Altoona continues its homestand this Thursday, October 10, when the Lions will play their first Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference match of the 2024-25 season by hosting nearby rival Mount Aloysius College. Start time for the match is slated for 4:30 p.m., and it will also represent the Lions' Senior Day.
