
Men’s Tennis Sweeps Bobcats in Sunday Doubleheader
GREENSBURG, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona men's tennis team got back to Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference play on Sunday, when the Lions traveled to the Greensburg Racquet Club to face conference opponent Pitt-Greensburg in a doubleheader.
Penn State Altoona (9-2, 4-1 AMCC) came away with a pair of 7-0 wins over Pitt-Greensburg (1-9, 0-3 AMCC), and the Lions have now won four of their five AMCC matches to date.
Match One: Penn State Altoona 7, Pitt-Greensburg 0
The Lions posted a dominant performance in their first match of the day, surrendering just seven games to the Bobcats across nine combined doubles and singles matches.
Penn State Altoona blanked Pitt-Greensburg in doubles, winning all three matches by scores of 6-0. Casey Hess (Annville, PA/Annville-Cleona)/Andrew Chronister (York, PA/Dallastown) got their third win of the season while competing in the No. 1 match, Gabriel Lopez (Wilmette, IL/New Trier Township)/Nick Beard (Manns Choice, PA/Bedford) also picked up their third win together in the No. 2 spot, and Kadyn Carey (Altoona, PA/Altoona)/Wilhem Grot (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone) earned their first win playing at No. 3.
Atop the lineup in singles, Hess and Chronister each recorded 6-0, 6-0 victories over their opponents, with Hess' win being his seventh of the season and Chronister's representing his eighth. Beard prevailed 6-3, 6-0 at No. 3 singles for his eighth win of the year, and Jackson Newell (Leechburg, PA/Kiski Area) recorded win number seven with a 6-0, 6-0 triumph in the No. 4 match. Emmett Hibbs (Richfield, PA/East Juniata) earned his third victory with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 5, and Grot also posted a 6-2, 6-0 decision over his opponent while competing in the No. 6 match, getting his seventh win of the season.
Match Two: Penn State Altoona 7, Pitt-Greensburg 0
Penn State Altoona again won in commanding fashion, yielding only 11 games to the Bobcats in nine total matches.
The tandem of Hess/Chronister recorded another 6-0 win at No. 1 doubles for their fourth victory together. In the No. 2 match, Carey/Lopez teamed up for a 6-0 victory for their second win of the season as a duo. Beard/Newell were the No. 3 doubles pairing, and they won 6-1 for their second victory of the year.
Hess notched his eighth win of the year with a 6-0, 6-0 whitewash of his opponent in the No. 1 singles match, and Beard got his ninth win with a 6-0, 6-0 blanking in the No. 2 spot. Newell moved up to the No. 3 singles spot and pulled off a 6-4, 6-3 win for his eighth overall singles victory, and Lopez entered the lineup at the No. 4 slot, where he won 6-1, 6-0 for his second singles triumph of the season. Carey was also inserted into the singles lineup and registered his fourth victory of the season with a 6-0, 6-1 defeat of his opponent in the No. 5 match. Hibbs moved to the No. 6 spot and won 6-1, 6-0 for his fourth victory of the year.
Next up, the Penn State Altoona men's tennis team will host its final home match of the 2024-25 season this Wednesday, April 9, when the Lions will play their last AMCC match of the regular season, going up against nearby league rival Mount Aloysius College. The start time for that match is 7:30 p.m.
