Men’s Tennis Blanks Mounties for AMCC Win

ALTOONA, Pa. – In its final Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference match of the regular season, the Penn State Altoona men's tennis team posted a 7-0 victory over nearby league rival Mount Aloysius College at the Gorilla House Gym on Wednesday night.

Penn State Altoona (10-2, 5-1 AMCC) was dominant in doubles play, defeating Mount Aloysius (5-8, 2-1 AMCC) in all three matches by scores of 6-0. The Lions continued their command of the match by prevailing in all six singles matches, blanking the Mounties in the overall match.

In No. 1 doubles, the team of Casey Hess (Annville, PA/Annville-Cleona)/Andrew Chronister (York, PA/Dallastown) earned their fifth win together. The duo of Kadyn Carey (Altoona, PA/Altoona)/Gabriel Lopez (Wilmette, IL/New Trier Township) got their third victory of the season at No. 2 doubles, and Nick Beard (Manns Choice, PA/Bedford)/Jackson Newell (Leechburg, PA/Kiski Area) also picked up their third win at No. 3. All three doubles teams won by scores of 6-0.

In singles, Hess came out on top by a score of 6-0, 6-2 in the No. 1 match for his ninth win of the season, and Chronister recorded a 6-2, 6-2 decision over his opponent to move his singles record to 9-0. Beard won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3 singles for his team-leading 10th victory of the season, and Newell came in with a 6-0, 6-2 win in the No. 4 spot for his ninth triumph of the year. Carey won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 for his fifth victory, and Wilhelm Grot (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone) earned his eighth win of the season after defeating his opponent 6-0, 6-0.

Next up, the Penn State Altoona men's tennis team will travel to eastern Pennsylvania for a weekend road trip, during which the Lions will compete against a trio of non-conference teams. On Saturday, April 12, Penn State Altoona will face York College (Pa.) at 1 p.m., then go up against Lebanon Valley College later that evening at 7 p.m. On Sunday, April 13, the Lions close their weekend with a 12 p.m. match against Penn State Harrisburg.
