Men’s Volleyball Loses Two in Tri-Match at Juniata

HUNTINGDON, Pa. – Penn State Altoona men's volleyball took on a pair of quality non-conference opponents on Saturday at Juniata College's Memorial Gymnasium, losing 3-0 to T-No. 7 Stevens Institute of Technology and 3-0 to Juniata.

Match One: Stevens 3, Penn State Altoona 0

The Lions (8-11) first took on Stevens, which entered tied for the seventh spot in the most recent American Volleyball Coaches Association Top 15 poll. Stevens (17-4) swept Penn State Altoona 25-23, 25-14, and 25-19.

Ben Beaver (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) and Frank Perehinec (Altoona, PA/Altoona) tied for the team lead in kills with seven apiece, and they also each recorded two block assists. Perehinec finished with six digs, while Beaver had four.

Mirko Pandini (Milan, Italy/Greater Latrobe) finished with a team-high three block assists to go along with four kills, and Daniel Jordan (Pittsburgh, PA/Thomas Jefferson) also had four kills while posting one block assist.

Tyler Sheaffer (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra) totaled a team-leading 24 assists and added five digs and one block assist. Mattthew Vandeveire (Washington, D.C./West Springfield) recorded a team-high 15 digs.

Match Two: Juniata 3, Penn State Altoona 0

The Lions' day did not get any easier in the team's second match, in which they faced Juniata (13-6), who was receiving votes in the AVCA Top 15 poll. The Eagles prevailed in three sets by scores of 25-18, 25-19, and 25-20.

Beaver and Perehinec again tied for the team-high in kills with six each. Beaver also had five digs, three block assists, one solo block, and one service ace, and Perehinec had a team-high eight digs, one block assist, and one ace.

Sheaffer finished with 14 assists and a block assist. Vandeveire and Micah Brinker (Lock Haven, PA/PA Cyber) finished with seven digs each. Jordan recorded four block assists.

Penn State Altoona men's volleyball returns to Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference action on Saturday, March 21, traveling to Wittenberg University to face Penn State Behrend and Thiel College.
