Virtual Senior Day: Men’s Volleyball

Virtual Senior Day: Men’s Volleyball

The COVID-19 spread has forced a halt to sports around the country. Because of this, several Penn State Altoona NCAA Division III sports teams had their spring seasons abruptly cut short. With teams' seasons ended in the early-to-middle stages of their schedules, graduating senior student-athletes were prevented from having the opportunity to be recognized with Senior Day ceremonies in the final home games of their collegiate careers.

However, Penn State Altoona Athletics understands the importance of honoring our senior student-athletes for their hard work and commitment to their teams throughout their collegiate careers. That's why we're introducing a "Virtual Senior Day" series to recognize graduating senior student-athletes whose seasons were cut short.

The first installment of "Virtual Senior Day" features men's volleyball, with its lone graduating senior, Tanner Yaw (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra). The Lions' Senior Day ceremony would have been Sunday, March 29 during the team's final regular season home match.

#2 Tanner Yaw

Outside Hitter             Palmyra, Pa.

Senior outside hitter Tanner Yaw has been a four-year member of the Penn State Altoona men's volleyball program. Yaw was a member of the Lions team that won the North Eastern Athletic Conference and Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference championships during the 2017 season and advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Yaw has played in 41 career matches for Penn State Altoona, appearing in a total of 81 sets. He has accumulated career totals of 43 digs, 24.0 points, 13 kills, 10 service aces, seven assists, and two total blocks.

During his Penn State Altoona career, Yaw has also been recognized for his academics, as he has earned spots on the AMCC's Academic All-Conference team and the Eastern College Athletic Conference's Honor Roll, and he was also chosen as a NEAC Scholar-Athlete. At the conclusion of 2017-18, Yaw was selected as Penn State Altoona's Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the highest individual student-athlete recognition awarded by the Penn State Altoona Athletics department.

Yaw has been a three-sport athlete during his Penn State Altoona career, as he has also been the starting goalkeeper on the men's soccer team and a regular in the lineup for the men's swimming team.

Yaw is the son of Lori and Dana Yaw. A native of Palmyra, Pennsylvania, he graduated from Palmyra Area High School. Yaw will graduate from Penn State Altoona with a degree in Accounting.
