
Lions Close Regular Season with Home Sweep of Houghton
ALTOONA, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona men's volleyball team wrapped up its 2025 regular season with a victory on Friday night, when the Lions swept first-year Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference foe Houghton University 3-0 in Adler Arena.
Penn State Altoona (14-12, 4-2 AMCC) pulled out a 25-21 win in the opening set, then handled Houghton (2-20, 1-4 AMCC) by scores of 25-11 and 25-13 in the next two sets. With their AMCC Tournament ticket punched, the Lions will now await the announcement of the conference's postseason tournament field after the conclusion of regular season play around the league.
Caleb Fries (Altoona, PA/Altoona) tallied a match-high 15 points for Penn State Altoona on 12 kills, two service aces, and a solo block. Michael Hansen (Palatine, IL/William Fremd) scored 8.5 points on eight kills and a block assist.
Jack McKenna (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional) added 5.5 points on four kills, an ace, and a block assist, and Owen Pratt (Pennsburg, PA/Upper Perkiomen) chipped in 4.5 points on four kills and a block assist.
Mason Grover (Penfield, NY/Penfield) recorded a match-best 24 assists, and Adam Chan (Framingham, MA/Framingham) totaled a match-high seven digs.
Penn State Altoona tied its season high for hitting percentage, compiling a .368 attack percentage in the win while committing a season-low six attack errors.
The Lions and Highlanders kept things tight for much of the first set. Leading 10-9, Penn State Altoona scored three points in a row on a trio of Houghton attack errors, one of which was a block from Pratt and Jacob Sandowski (Orland Park, IL/Carl Sandburg). Later, three kills from Fries helped the Lions to a five-point lead, 21-16. Another Fries kill got Penn State Altoona to set point, 24-21, and Landen Fisher (Altoona, PA/Altoona) put the finishing touches on the set to get the Lions a 25-21 victory.
Houghton scored the first two points of the second set, but Penn State Altoona went on a 7-1 run after that to establish a four-point lead. Up 10-7 later, the Lions reeled off six points in a row on four Houghton errors and kills from McKenna and Fries. Two more errors by the visitors, along with a block from McKenna and Hansen, helped Penn State Altoona to an 11-point lead, 19-8. Kills from Hansen and Pratt, as well as service aces by McKenna and Joshua Harclerode (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth), pushed the Lions to a 25-11 win in the second set.
Penn State Altoona took a commanding lead to start the third set, scoring the first seven points in a row, including two kills apiece from McKenna and Fries. Kills by Hansen and Grover, as well as a Fries ace, helped boost the Lions' lead to 11-1, and Penn State Altoona was able to increase its advantage to 16-5 midway through the set. The Lions kept a comfortable cushion over Houghton, and a Hansen kill late in the game made it 23-10. Two service errors by the Highlanders got Penn State Altoona to the finish line, and the Lions clinched the sweep with a 25-13 victory in the third set.
