
Softball Splits Sunday Games
LITTLE RIVER, S.C. – The Penn State Altoona softball team added a win and a loss to its record on Sunday, as the Lions continued their week competing in the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic.
The Lions (2-4) posted an 8-0 victory over Gwynedd Mercy University to start their day, but Penn State Altoona ended Sunday with a 7-2 loss to New Jersey City University.
Game One: Penn State Altoona 8, Gwynedd Mercy 0 (Final/5 innings)
Penn State Altoona scored four runs in the fourth, then four more in the fifth to defeat the Griffins (0-1) in five innings.
Josselyn Nau (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) tossed a complete game shutout for Penn State Altoona, achieving her second win of the season. Nau allowed just four hits and struck out four batters.
Alyssa Fisher (Lock Haven, PA/Central Mountain) was 2-for-4 with an inside-the-park home run, three RBI, and a run scored. Allison Beeman (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone) went 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored. Lauren Davidson (Clearfield, PA/DuBois Central Catholic) and Gianna Hoppel (Lewistown, PA/Mifflin County) also had one hit apiece for Penn State Altoona.
The Lions broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth. Madison Kennedy (Williamsburg, PA/Central) drew a leadoff walk and later scored on Davidson's squeeze bunt. Beeman, Fisher, and Hoppel added RBI singles, and Penn State Altoona took a 4-0 advantage into the next frame.
The Lions tacked four more runs on to their total in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs, Davidson singled, and Madison Sitarek (Huddleston, VA/Century) reached on an error to keep the inning alive. Beeman drove both runners in with her double to make it 6-0, and Fisher hit an inside-the-park home run to activate the run rule, ending the game at 8-0 in favor of Penn State Altoona.
Game Two: New Jersey City 7, Penn State Altoona 2
New Jersey City (3-1) scored four runs in the top of the first inning, and the Gothic Knights never looked back, handing the Lions a five-run defeat.
Aubrey Dotts (Houtzdale, PA/Moshannon Valley), Carly Hutchinson (Wayne, PA/Conestoga), Hanna Lauck (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte), Karli Storm (Chest Springs, PA/Cambria Heights), Jillian Taylor (Irvona, PA/Glendale), and Fisher had one hit apiece for Penn State Altoona.
Kennedy got the start in the pitching circle and was saddled with the loss, going four innings, allowing four earned runs, and striking out three batters. Madalyn Maynard (Towanda, PA/Towanda) pitched three innings in relief, yielding just one run and recording a strikeout.
New Jersey City scored four runs in the top of the first, courtesy of four straight RBI singles from Jaelynn Barrios, Abby Castro, Meaghan Doyle, and Cheyenn Fulton. The Gothic Knights expanded their lead to 6-0 in the fourth, when Alonah Olden and Mya Villanueva had run-scoring hits. A solo home run by Doyle in the fifth made it 7-0.
Penn State Altoona got on the board in the bottom of the fifth with a pair of runs. With one runner on, Storm's RBI triple accounted for the Lions' first run, and Lauck followed with an RBI single to make it 7-2.
But Penn State Altoona did no further damage, as New Jersey City finished with a five-run win over the Lions.
Next up, Penn State Altoona softball faces Dickinson University and Mississippi University for Women on Monday, March 10, in the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic. The Lions take on Dickinson at 1 p.m. at the North Myrtle Beach Complex in Little River, S.C., before facing the MUFW at 5 p.m. at the Central Park Complex in North Myrtle Beach.
