Gianna Hoppel (Lewistown, PA/Mifflin County) drove in a pair of runs, while Karli Storm (Chest Springs, PA/Cambria Heights) walked three times and scored a pair of runs.
Madalyn Maynard (Towanda, PA/Towanda) got the start in the pitching circle for the Lions and took a no decision, after she allowed just one run across three innings and struck out four batters. Sidney Nihart (Ashville, PA/Cambria Heights) finished things off, tossing the next four innings of the game, allowing just one earned run, and striking out three batters to pick up her first collegiate win.
SUNY Canton scored a run in the top of the first on a Jordyn Tarbox sacrifice fly, but Penn State Altoona answered with five runs in the bottom of the first. Singles by Fisher and Davidson started the inning, and Hoppel's RBI single to center and Hanna Lauck's (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) sac fly to center scored each player. One batter later, Madison Kennedy's (Williamsburg, PA/Central) RBI double made it 3-1, and Beeman later hit a two-run single to center to extend the Lions' lead to 5-1.
Penn State Altoona added a run to its lead in each of the next two innings. In the second, Fisher led off with a walk and later came home on Hoppel's sac fly to center. The Lions again took advantage of a leadoff walk in the third, when Storm drew a free pass to start the frame and later scored on Flynn's RBI single through the left side.
The Roos picked up a run in the top of the fifth, then another in the sixth to narrow the Penn State Altoona lead to 7-3. But the Lions added three more to their total in the bottom half of the sixth. Flynn started the inning with a single to shortstop, then scored on Fisher's RBI double to right center. Two batters later, with two outs, Carly Hutchinson's (Wayne, PA/Conestoga) RBI single drove Fisher home, and Hutchinson scored on a Haleigh Peters (Lock Haven, PA/Central Mountain) RBI base hit to left.

Penn State Altoona drew first blood in the top of the first. Fisher and Hoppel both reached after being hit by pitches, and Lauck scored them both with her double to left center. One batter later, Kennedy's RBI single made it 3-0.
The Lions doubled their lead in the third. Hoppel, Storm, and Kennedy loaded the bases, and Maynard's sacrifice fly to center plated Hoppel. Dotts followed that with a two-run single to right, upping Penn State Altoona's lead to 6-0.
The Lions increased their advantage to 11-0 in the top of the fifth. Dotts hit an RBI single to left, and Peters scored on a wild pitch to give Penn State Altoona an eight-run lead. Later, Hoppel drove in a pair with her base hit, and a Storm RBI single made it 11-0.
MUW scored a run in the bottom of the fifth, but Penn State Altoona maintained its lead the rest of the way to end the game early via the run rule.
Now, the Penn State Altoona softball team will return to Pennsylvania, where they will continue their schedule on Thursday, March 20. The Lions will host their home opener that afternoon in a doubleheader against non-conference opponent Susquehanna University, with game one slated to start at 3 p.m.
