Women's Basketball Wins Season Opener

HARRISONBURG, Va. - The Penn State Altoona women's basketball team started its 2025-26 season on the road against the Eastern Mennonite Royals. It was a tight game, but the Lions came away with victory, winning 64-62.  

First Quarter: 17-13 Eastern Mennonite 

  • The Lions struggled to score points in the first quarter, shooting 29.4% overall (5 of 17 field goals made).  

  • Conversely, Eastern Mennonite had a shot percentage of 50% overall (7 of 14 field goals made). 

 

Second Quarter: 32-27 Eastern Mennonite 

  • The Royals increased their lead slightly in the second quarter, as the Lions continued to struggle to score points. 

  • Penn State Altoona went 6 for 18 in field goals (33.3% shot percentage overall), while Eastern Mennonite went 6 for 15 in field goals (40% shot percentage overall). 

 

Third Quarter: 54-47 Penn State Altoona 

  • The lead shifted in the third quarter as the Lions scored the same number of points in the third quarter as the two first quarters combined (27). 

  • Penn State Altoona improved on their shooting in this quarter, going 11 for 21 in field goals (52.4 shot percentage overall).  

  • The third quarter would also be a quarter full of rebounds, as Penn State Altoona had 17 rebounds total.  

 

Fourth Quarter: 64-62 Penn State Altoona 

  • The fourth quarter would be a frenetic affair, as the Royals looked for the win, while the Lions looked to hold onto their lead.  

  • Turnovers were the highest in the fourth quarter, with both teams turning the ball over 5 times.  

  • Eastern Mennonite shot 41.7% from field goals and 50% from free throws, but could not overtake the Lions, as Penn State Altoona rode their lead to win 64-62. 

 

Team Leaders 

  • Avana Sayles (Venetia, PA/Peters Township) led the team in points with 16 and had a double-double by grabbing 11 rebounds.

  • Lanie Wilt (Altoona, PA/Altoona) led in assists with 4. 

  • Jaidyn McCracken (Bellwood, PA/Bellwood-Antis) led in steals with 5.

  • Haley Hicks (Wylie, TX/Wylie East) had a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
 

Penn State Altoona women's basketball returns to action next Tuesday, November 11, as they face Gettysburg at Adler Arena. The game is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m.
