Women’s Bowling Falls 2-0 to Mount Aloysius in Home Finale

ALTOONA, Pa. – Penn State Altoona women's bowling hosted its last home match of the 2019-20 season on Sunday afternoon at the F.A. Gerhart Lanes at the Bavarian Aid Society, and the Lady Lions lost a pair of baker matches to nearby Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Mount Aloysius College.

Playing in two five-game baker matches decided by total pinfall, Penn State Altoona lost by scores of 753-670 and 813-663 to Mount Aloysius.

In the first match, Mount Aloysius won the first three games by scores of 156-113, 145-128, and 165-90. Penn State Altoona bounced back nicely in the fourth and fifth games of the match, prevailing by scores of 178-134 and 161-153. But the Lady Mounties won the opening baker match by an 83-pin margin.

In the day's second and final match, Penn State Altoona carried over its momentum from the first match by winning the opening game 187-132. But Mount Aloysius controlled the match the rest of the way, winning the next four games by scores of 152-103, 165-103, 176-92, and 188-178.

Allyson Givler (Lancaster, PA/Hempfield) bowled 20 frames on the day for the Lady Lions, tying for the team-high with six strikes while compiling a baker average of 14.65. Jennifer Worley (Altoona, PA/Altoona) posted a team-high baker average of 15.07 in 14 frames, and she tied Givler with six strikes.

The match also marked the Penn State Altoona women's bowling program's Senior Day. In a pre-match ceremony, the team's coaches, staff, players, and fans recognized Lady Lions senior bowler Lucia Perez (Cochabamba, Bolivia/CCS).

Perez has been a two-year member of the Penn State Altoona women's bowling team, participating in nine different events for the Lady Lions thus far in her collegiate career. In 2018-19, Perez averaged 12.57 pins per frame in baker play and 108.2 per game in traditional matches. Coming into today's matches this season, she is averaging 11.90 pins per frame during baker play and 124.7 per game in traditional matches.

"Lucia has been dedicated to Penn State Altoona bowling since our first meeting last fall. At that meeting, she said: 'Trust me, coach. When I start something, I won't give up and will give my best.' Those words rang true, and she constantly tries to better herself in this difficult sport," said Penn State Altoona head coach John Carey. "Her drive to be a better bowler is undeniable. She often works on her skills on her own outside of the normal bowling practice nights. All the time she spends is to continue to become the best bowler she can possibly be."

Next up, the Penn State Altoona women's bowling team will compete in its largest event of the season, as the Lady Lions take part in the Saint Francis University Red Flash Invitational on Friday, January 24 through Sunday, January 26 at Holiday Bowl in Altoona.

Friday's action starts at 11:00 a.m., Saturday's matches will begin at 10:00 a.m., and Sunday's competition will open at 9:00 a.m.
