Women’s Bowling Opens SFU Invitational

ALTOONA, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona women's bowling team kicked off its participation in its largest and longest tournament of the season on Friday at Holiday Bowl, when the Lady Lions competed in day one of the three-day Saint Francis University Red Flash Invitational.

Friday's action consisted of five five-game baker matches decided by total pinfall, with Penn State Altoona taking on three non-conference teams and two Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference foes.

In its first match of the day, Penn State Altoona suffered an 822-530 loss to Felician University. Felician prevailed by scores of 151-100, 167-116, 148-104, and 171-101.

The Lady Lions took on Walsh University in their second match of the day, with Walsh pulling out a 683-617 victory. Walsh bested Penn State Altoona in pinfall in games one, two, four, and five, winning those by respective scores of 152-106, 155-150, 137-123, and 137-123. The Lady Lions beat Walsh in pinfall in the third game of the match by a score of 115-102.

Penn State Altoona took on a familiar opponent in its third match on Friday, facing AMCC opponent Mount Aloysius for the fifth time this season. The Lady Mounties won the match by a final score of 834-606, taking the first four games by scores of 166-138, 187-101, 143-105, and 206-128. Penn State Altoona edged Mount Aloysius 134-132 in the fifth game.

In the fourth match of the day, Mount Saint Mary's University posted an 802-652 win over Penn State Altoona. Mount St. Mary's won the pinfall battle in the first, second, and fifth games by respective scores of 177-136, 159-79, and 169-123. Penn State Altoona took the pinfall wins in games three and four by scores of 154-143 and 160-154, with the Lady Lions' score of 160 representing its best score of the day.

Penn State Altoona finished day one against another AMCC opponent, La Roche University. Playing each other for the fourth time this season, the Lady Redhawks defeated the Lady Lions by a score of 625-554. Penn State Altoona won the first and third games by scores of 134-112 and 110-100, but La Roche won the match by recording pinfall advantages of 122-89, 162-98, and 129-123 in games two, four, and five, respectively.

Penn State Altoona women's bowling continues action in the SFU Invitational tomorrow, Saturday, January 25 for day two. Saturday's competition will feature traditional team format matches, beginning at approximately 10:00 a.m.
