Women’s Bowling Finishes Season in AMCC Round Robin #2

ALTOONA, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona women's bowling program hosted the second and final Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Round Robin event for the league's South Group division teams on Saturday afternoon at the F.A. Gerhart Lanes.

Penn State Altoona (2-4, 2-4 AMCC) recorded one win and two losses on the day, which saw the teams compete in traditional team format matches. The Lady Lions dropped 1,889 pins as a team, averaging 125.9 per game.

Mount Aloysius College won the day, going 3-0 and clinching a berth into next Saturday's AMCC Tournament semifinal round. New Jersey City University also punched its ticket to the AMCC postseason, going 2-1 in Saturday's action. Penn State Altoona and La Roche University, which went 0-3 on Saturday, will not qualify for the AMCC Tournament.

The Lady Lions started the day out by taking a pair of losses, falling 803-581 to New Jersey City University before being defeated 824-641 by Mount Aloysius. Penn State Altoona finished the day on a strong note, salvaging a win in the third and final match, a 667-634 victory over La Roche.

Breanna Yarnall (Bedford, PA/Bedford) led Penn State Altoona in total pinfall and average, dropping 420 pins for an average of 140.0 per game. She ranked 11th out of 23 individual bowlers in total pins on the day, and she also had the Lady Lions' high score when she rolled a 179 against La Roche.

Kaitlyn Estright (Norristown, PA/Archbishop Carroll) dropped 395 pins for an average of 131.67 per game, and Allyson Givler (Lancaster, PA/Hempfield) totaled 387 pins for an average score of 129.0 per game. Chloe Mazza (Burlington, NJ/Burlington Township) finished with 371 pins, dropping 123.67 per game, and Alyssa Bender (Altoona, PA/Altoona) rounded out Penn State Altoona's five with a total of 316 pins for an average of 105.33 per game.

Saturday also marked the Penn State Altoona women's bowling program's Senior Day, and the team recognized Bender, the squad's lone senior.

Bender has been a two-year member of the Lady Lions bowling team. In 2019-20, her first season with the program, she competed in all nine events, bowling 199 frames in baker matches and 190 frames in traditional team format matches. Bender finished that season with the third-best baker average on her team, putting down 12.66 pins per frame, and she ranked fifth on her team in traditional average, recording an average score of 123.3 per game. This season, Bender holds a baker average of 13.72 and a traditional team format average of 105.33 per game.

Bender hails from Altoona and graduated from Altoona Area High School. The daughter of Kim Frey, she is majoring in Kinesiology and is a member of the Kinesiology Club at Penn State Altoona. Bender is also a Dean's List student.
