Women’s Bowling Starts AMCC Round Robin #2 in Sixth Place

KENMORE, N.Y. – After its first day of competition in this weekend's Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Round Robin, hosted by Medaille College at Kenmore Lanes, the Penn State Altoona women's bowling team is in sixth place out of 11 teams.

This weekend's round robin consists of five-game baker matches, and Penn State Altoona went 2-3 in head-to-head results on Saturday. The Lions finished with 3,479 pins dropped over five matches, averaging 139.2 pins per game.

Saint Vincent College had a 5-0 record through Saturday to rank first, dropping 4,519 pins. Pitt-Bradford was second with a 4-1 record and 3,941 pins.

"The ladies struggled but fought hard to try and get some wins today," said Penn State Altoona head coach Elizabeth Rhodes. "Some easy spares were missed, but the team came together at the end to pick up two wins for the day."

In it first baker match of the day, Penn State Altoona suffered a close loss to La Roche University, falling 771-756. The Lions took an early lead with a 154-142 win in the first game, before the Redhawks came back with advantages of 157-144, 173-149, and 130-110 in the next three games. Penn State Altoona came together to bowl its best game of the day in the fifth, winning it by a 199-169 margin, but La Roche was still able to pull out the 15-pin match win.

Penn State Altoona took another relatively close loss in the second match, losing 750-722 to William Smith College. After William Smith won the first game 173-152, Penn State Altoona answered by claiming a 176-134 victory in the second game. But William Smith took the next three games by scores of 157-147, 131-125, and 155-122 to seal the match win.

Pitt-Bradford posted a lopsided victory over Penn State Altoona in match number three, winning 918-634 over the Lions. Penn State Altoona held a 158-154 edge over the Panthers in the third game, but Pitt-Bradford ran up a big lead in the other four games, including outscoring the Lions 256-110 in the fifth game.

Penn State Altoona finished the day strong by winning its last two matches. That run started with a 681-628 victory over Pitt-Greensburg in the fourth game, where the Lions posted game wins of 154-137, 146-119, 148-108, and 126-109 in games one, three, four, and five to propel themselves to victory.

The Lions wrapped up the day with a 686-661 comeback win over Hilbert College. After the Hawks won the first two games by scores of 138-123 and 165-129, Penn State Altoona battled back to win the match. The Lions won the third game 136-116, and after a tight 128-123 victory by Hilbert in the fourth game, Penn State Altoona constructed a 175-114 win in the fifth to triumph in the match.

Penn State Altoona women's bowling wraps up its weekend at the second and final regular season AMCC Round Robin tomorrow, Sunday, February 19. Beginning at 9 a.m., the Lions will take on the rest of their conference opponents: Mount Aloysius College, New Jersey City University, Penn State Behrend, Medaille College, and Saint Vincent College.
