Women’s Swimming Defeats LHU in Season Opener

ALTOONA, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona women's swimming team started its 2022-23 schedule with a strong win at home on Saturday afternoon, posting a 111-69 victory over Division II opponent Lock Haven University in the Adler Natatorium.

Penn State Altoona won eight of the day's 10 events, racking up seven individual first place finishes and one win in a relay event. Grace Dangelo (State College, PA/State College) and Sarah Petry (St. Benedict, PA/Cambria Heights) helped lead the way for the Lions, as each swimmer recorded two individual wins.

Dangelo won the 100 Yard IM with a time of 1:04.61, and she followed that up by taking first place in the meet's next event, the 50 Yard Butterfly, by clocking in at 27.60. Petry prevailed in the 200 Yard Freestyle, finishing in 2:05.45, and she later won the 500 Yard Freestyle with a time of 5:50.91.

Avery Heisey (Lancaster, PA/Conestoga Valley) took first in the 50 Yard Freestyle with a time of 26.46, and Madison Coleman (Altoona, PA/Tyrone) won the 100 Yard Freestyle by finishing in 58.41. Teah Sponsler (Halifax, PA/Halifax) triumphed in the 50 Yard Backstroke, recording a time of 30.98 to take first place.

In the day's final event, the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay, the foursome of Heisey, Petry, Sponsler, and Coleman teamed up to clinch first with a combined time of 1:46.20.

Penn State Altoona women's swimming returns to action next weekend, when the Lions will compete in their first road meet of the season. The team will head to Washington, Pa. to take on non-conference opponent Washington & Jefferson College in a dual meet on Saturday, October 15 at 1:00 p.m.
