Women’s Swimming Holds 10th Place After Day Two at Oberlin

OBERLIN, Ohio – Following day two of the Oberlin College Invitational on Friday night at the Carr Pool, the Penn State Altoona women's swimming team remained in 10th place out of 12 teams.

The Lions scored 184 points during Friday evening's finals session, boosting their team score to 315 through two days. In the team standings, Penn State Altoona ranks ahead of fellow Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Penn State Behrend (11th place, 293 points) and non-conference foe Chatham University (12th place, 140.5 points).

Host school Oberlin holds first place through the first two days of the three-day invitational with a team score of 709.5. SUNY Brockport is in second place with 536 points.

Penn State Altoona started Friday evening's finals session with a team record-setting time and a ninth place finish in the 200 Yard Medley Relay, as Teah Sponsler (Halifax, PA/Halifax), Grace Dangelo (State College, PA/State College), Madison Coleman (Altoona, PA/Tyrone), and Avery Heisey (Lancaster, PA/Conestoga Valley) combined for a time of 1:55.28. The foursome's time in that event set a new women's swimming team record, surpassing the previous mark of 1:57.50.

Dangelo followed that up by winning the 'B' final of the 400 Yard IM, finishing in 4:57.63 to take ninth place overall and first in her group. Sponsler swam in the 'B' final of the 100 Yard Butterfly, recording a time of 1:03.56 to take fifth place in the 'B' group and 13th place overall.

The Lions' success in 'B' finals of individual swims continued in the 200 Yard Freestyle, where Coleman was the 'B' runner-up with a time of 2:02.19, placing 10th overall. Sarah Petry (St. Benedict, PA/Cambria Heights) competed in the 'C' final of the 200 Yard Freestyle, clocking in at 2:04.11 to win the 'C' group and take 17th place overall.

Grace Frey (Wayne, PA/Conestoga) made the cut to compete in the 'B' final of the 100 Yard Breaststroke, where she took fifth place in her group and 13th overall by posting a time of 1:14.66. In the night's last individual event, Sponsler won the 'B' final of the 100 Yard Backstroke, taking ninth place overall by finishing in 1:03.19.

The Lions capped the evening with a fifth place finish in the 800 Yard Freestyle Relay, in which Petry, Coleman, Dangelo, and Heisey totaled a time of 8:29.02.

Penn State Altoona will now head into the third and final day of the Oberlin Invitational tomorrow, Saturday, November 19. Saturday's schedule has been adjusted, with one finals session now occurring at 10:00 a.m. in place of morning preliminaries and evening finals.
