Women’s Swimming Defeats W&J 151-82 in Home Opener

ALTOONA, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona women's swimming team got its 2023-24 schedule started at home on Friday night, when the Lions took down non-conference opponent Washington & Jefferson College 151-82 in the Adler Natatorium.

Penn State Altoona recorded 11 first-place finishes during the meet to overpower W&J. Madison Coleman (Altoona, PA/Tyrone) and Sarah Petry (St. Benedict, PA/Cambria Heights) led the way with three individual wins apiece for the Lions, while Ayva Harris (Monroeville, PA/Gateway) and McKenna Holl (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) each had a pair of first places.

Petry took first place in the meet's first individual swim, the 1000 Yard Freestyle, by finishing in 12:48.21. Shortly thereafter, she won the 50 Yard Backstroke with a time of 31.35, and she later picked up her third victory of the night by clocking in at 5:52.17 during the 500 Yard Freestyle.

Coleman's first win of the meet came in the 200 Yard Freestyle, during which she finished in 2:08.12. She later took first place in the 100 Yard Freestyle with a time of 58.09, and she netted her third first-place finish in the 200 Yard IM, compiling a time of 2:25.57.

Harris earned a first-place finish in the 50 Yard Breaststroke with a time of 34.96, and she later won the 100 Yard Breaststroke in 1:17.83. Holl came in first in the 50 Yard Freestyle with a time of 27.07, and she placed first in the 100 Yard Backstroke after clocking in at 1:06.65.

Penn State Altoona also earned a first place in the meet-opening 200 Yard Medley Relay, during which the foursome of Teah Sponsler (Halifax, PA/Halifax), Harris, Coleman, and Emma Fraundorfer (Altoona, PA/Altoona) combined for a time of 1:59.78.

The women's swimming team returns to action on Saturday, October 28 with another home dual meet, as the Lions will host non-conference foe Saint Vincent College at 1 p.m.
