Women’s Swimming Takes Seventh in Malone Invite

CANTON, Ohio – The Penn State Altoona women's swimming team competed in the three-day Malone University Invitational, which spanned Thursday through Saturday at Malone's Branin Natatorium.

By the conclusion of the meet, the Lions finished in seventh place out of 12 teams with a score of 897 points. Oberlin College won the invitational with a team score of 2,076 points, while Transylvania University was the runner-up with 1,820.

Penn State Altoona had several highlights from its performances during the three finals sessions.

Headlining the Lions' highlights from the meet was a record-breaking time by Sarah Petry (St. Benedict, PA/Cambria Heights) in the 1,650 Yard Freestyle. Petry compiled a time of 19:29.94 to take 11th place in the event, and her time set a new Penn State Altoona women's swimming team record. It surpassed the previous record, 19:37.72, set by former swimmer Grace Dangelo on January 15, 2022.

Petry also qualified for the 'A' final in the 200 Yard Freestyle and came in sixth place, after she clocked in at 2:02.64. Later in the meet, she came in 16th in the 500 Yard Freestyle final, finishing in 5:45.49.

Penn State Altoona started the meet with an 11th-place finish in the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay, when the group of Madison Coleman (Altoona, PA/Tyrone), Ava Monborne (Ebensburg, PA/Central Cambria), McKenna Holl (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin), and Emma Fraundorfer (Altoona, PA/Altoona) combined for a time of 1:45.73.

Teah Sponsler (Halifax, PA/Halifax) was the Lions' top finisher in the 100 Yard Butterfly, taking 12th place overall and fourth place in the 'B' final by recording a time of 1:05.85.

Ayva Harris (Monroeville, PA/Gateway) qualified to compete in the 'A' final of the 200 Yard Breaststroke, and she finished that event in eighth place with a time of 2:43.13. She also took 14th place overall and sixth in the 'B' final of the 100 Yard Breaststroke, finishing in 1:15.99.

Holl qualified for the 'A' final in the 200 Yard Backstroke, and she took sixth place by clocking in at 2:20.57. Holl was also the 'B' final runner-up and 10th place overall in the 100 Yard Backstroke, registering a time of 1:04.65.

Penn State Altoona took eighth place in the 800 Yard Freestyle Relay final, during which Petry, Coleman, Monborne, and Fraundorfer came together to post a time of 8:49.31. The Lions also took a 10th-place finish in the 200 Yard Medley Relay, as the foursome of Holl, Harris, Coleman, and Fraundorfer finished in 2:00.04.

Coleman made the cut to swim in the 'A' final of the 200 Yard IM, and she nabbed sixth place by recording a time of 2:23.01. Later, she was the Lions' top finisher in the 100 Yard Freestyle, taking 16th place overall and eighth in the 'B' cut with a time of 57.76.

In the 400 Yard Medley Relay, Holl, Harris, Sponsler, and Petry combined for a time of 4:26.43 to earn eighth place. Later, Petry, Fraundorfer, Monborne, and Coleman finished in seventh place in the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay with a total time of 3:52.17.

Penn State Altoona women's swimming returns home for its next event, as the Lions will host Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Penn State Behrend on Saturday, December 2 at 1 p.m.
