Women’s Swimming Closes Regular Season with Tri-Meet Split

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona women's swimming team wrapped up its 2023-24 regular season schedule on Saturday afternoon, when the Lions faced non-conference opponents Elizabethtown College and Juniata College in a tri-meet hosted at Elizabethtown's Alumni Pool.

Penn State Altoona finished the day with a win and a loss, defeating Juniata 133-98 and falling 164-81 to Elizabethtown. The Lions finish their schedule with a 6-4 overall record in dual meets this season.

Penn State Altoona totaled a pair of first places in the meet, with one coming in an individual swim and the other being in a relay event.

The Lions started the meet with a third-place finish in the 200 Yard Medley Relay, where the foursome of McKenna Holl (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin), Ayva Harris (Monroeville, PA/Gateway), Teah Sponsler (Halifax, PA/Halifax), and Ava Monborne (Ebensburg, PA/Central Cambria) compiled a total time of 2:02.70.

Sarah Petry (St. Benedict, PA/Cambria Heights) notched a runner-up finish in the 1000 Yard Freestyle, clocking in at 12:03.31. Madison Coleman (Altoona, PA/Tyrone) took second place in the next event, when she recorded a time of 2:07.77 in the 200 Yard Freestyle.

Holl was the Lions' top finisher in the next event, the 100 Yard Backstroke, as she posted a time of 1:06.90 to grab third place. In the next event, the 100 Yard Breaststroke, Harris had her team's fastest time, ending in 1:16.30 to take fourth place. Monborne secured a third-place finish in the 50 Yard Freestyle, clinching a time of 27.22.

Coleman won the meet's next event, as she took first place in the 100 Yard Freestyle after clocking in at 57.88.

In the 200 Yard Backstroke, Holl led the way for the Lions by recording a time of 2:24.22 to take third place. Harris had a third-place finish in the next event, the 200 Yard Breaststroke, after posting a time of 2:46.06.

Petry earned her second runner-up finish of the meet when she placed second in the 500 Yard Freestyle with a time of 5:47.84. After that, Sponsler had Penn State Altoona's best finish in the 100 Yard Butterfly, clocking in at 1:11.35 for fourth place.

Coleman secured another second place in the following event, the 200 Yard IM, by earning a time of 2:29.28.

Penn State Altoona won the meet's last event, the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay, as the team of Petry, Holl, Monborne, and Coleman came together for a time of 1:49.96 to take first.

With the regular season now behind it, the Penn State Altoona women's swimming team will prepare for the four-day Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Championships. The event, which ranges from Wednesday, February 14 through Saturday, February 17, will be held at the Webster Aquatic Center in Webster, N.Y.
