Women’s Swimming Opens AMCC Championships in Third

WEBSTER, N.Y. – The Penn State Altoona women's swimming team embarked on its four-day competition in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Championships on Wednesday night, swimming in day one of the event, hosted jointly by the AMCC and Empire 8 athletic conferences at Webster Aquatic Center.

Penn State Altoona women's swimming scored 94 points on Wednesday while competing in a pair of relay events. The Lions finished the opening night of the championships in third place out of five AMCC teams, as well as fifth place out of eight teams in the combined AMCC-Empire 8 meet.

Alfred State College led the AMCC field with 122 points, while Penn State Behrend was second with 112 points. Pitt-Bradford finished the evening in fourth place with 74 points, and Wells College brought up fifth place with 60 points.

Penn State Altoona started Wednesday's round of finals with a third-place AMCC finish in the 200 Yard Medley Relay 'A' final, in which the squad of McKenna Holl (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin), Ayva Harris (Monroeville, PA/Gateway), Madison Coleman (Altoona, PA/Tyrone), and Ava Monborne (Ebensburg, PA/Central Cambria) combined for a time of 1:56.28 to come in third in the AMCC and sixth overall.

The Lions also picked up points in the 'B' final of that event, in which the foursome of Emma Fraundorfer (Altoona, PA/Altoona), Isabella Rhoades (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone), Teah Sponsler (Halifax, PA/Halifax), and Katie Chen (Jacksonville, FL/Creekside) came together for a time of 2:04.68 to finish eighth place in the AMCC.

The second and final event of Wednesday's action was the 800 Yard Freestyle Relay. In the 'A' final of that event, Penn State Altoona secured third place in the AMCC when Sarah Petry (St. Benedict, PA/Cambria Heights), Coleman, Monborne, and Holl posted a total time of 8:24.46 to also finish fifth overall.

In the 'B' final of the 800 Yard Freestyle Relay, the team of Fraundorfer, Chen, Rhoades, and Julia Daley (Langhorne, PA/Neshaminy) took eighth place in the AMCC with a combined time of 9:13.88.

The AMCC Championships resume tomorrow, Thursday, February 15, for day two of the event. Thursday's round opens with preliminaries at 10 a.m., and the day's finals will start at 5 p.m. Day two action will consist of the 500 Yard Freestyle, 200 Yard I.M., 50 Yard Freestyle, and 200 Yard Freestyle Relay.
