Women’s Swimming Stays in Third after Day Three of AMCC Championships

WEBSTER, N.Y. – The Penn State Altoona women's swimming team continued to hold third place on the team leaderboard, as the third day of this week's Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Championships concluded on Friday evening at the Webster Aquatic Center.

Penn State Altoona women's swimming has scored 330 points through three days of competition, ranking third in the AMCC team standings, ahead of fellow conference schools Pitt-Bradford (162.5 points) and Wells College (105 points). Penn State Behrend holds first place in the AMCC with 692.5 points, while Alfred State College is in second with 551 points.

Nazareth College is the top team in the combined AMCC-Empire 8 meet with 722 points.

Penn State Altoona had three swimmers qualify to compete in finals for the 100 Yard Butterfly. Teah Sponsler (Halifax, PA/Halifax) made the cut for the 'A' final, finishing in 1:04.80 to take third place in the AMCC and seventh overall. In the 'B' final, Katie Chen (Jacksonville, FL/Creekside) was second in that group and sixth in the AMCC with a time of 1:09.49, while Isabella Rhoades (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone) notched a time of 1:12.05 to earn eighth in the conference.

In the next event, the 200 Yard Freestyle, the Lions placed two swimmers in the 'A' final and one in the 'B.' Sarah Petry (St. Benedict, PA/Cambria Heights) led the way in the 'A', finishing as the AMCC runner-up and fifth place overall with a time of 1:59.60. Teammate Madison Coleman (Altoona, PA/Tyrone) took third place in the AMCC and ninth overall after recording a time of 2:02.56 in the 'A' final. In the 'B' cut, Ava Monborne (Ebensburg, PA/Central Cambria) took sixth in the AMCC with a time of 2:05.75.

Ayva Harris (Monroeville, PA/Gateway) qualified to swim in the 'A' final for the next event, the 100 Yard Breaststroke. Harris compiled a time of 1:12.40 to place fourth in the AMCC and eighth overall.

Three more Lions competed in the 100 Yard Backstroke finals. In the 'A' cut, McKenna Holl (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) placed sixth in the AMCC and ninth overall by finishing with a time of 1:04.74. Sponsler won the 'B' final with a time of 1:04.95 to place seventh in the AMCC, and Emma Fraundorfer (Altoona, PA/Altoona) had a time of 1:09.13 to come in 11th place in the AMCC.

The night finished with the 400 Yard Medley Relay. In the 'A' final of that event, Penn State Altoona's team of Fraundorfer, Harris, Sponsler, and Petry combined for a time of 4:23.65 to earn third place in the AMCC and sixth overall.

The women's swimming team will finish the AMCC Championships tomorrow, Saturday, February 17, by competing in the fourth and final day of the event. Saturday's preliminaries will start at 10 a.m., and the finals begin at 5 p.m. The week's last finals session will consist of the 1,650 Yard Freestyle, 200 Yard Backstroke, 100 Yard Freestyle, 200 Yard Breaststroke, 200 Yard Butterfly, and 400 Yard Freestyle Relay.
