Women’s Swimming Finishes Third at AMCC Championships

WEBSTER, N.Y. – By the conclusion of the fourth and final day of this week's Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Championships at the Webster Aquatic Center on Saturday, the Penn State Altoona women's swimming team ended up in third place out of five conference teams.

The Lions finished the meet with a four-day total of 469 points to take third place in the AMCC, ranking ahead of fellow conference schools Pitt-Bradford (230.5 points) and Wells College (157 points). Penn State Behrend won the AMCC – and was also the top overall team in the combined AMCC-Empire 8 meet – with 1,090.5 points, while Alfred State College was the AMCC runner-up with 825 points.

Saturday's finals session began with the 1,650 Yard Freestyle, in which the Lions had two swimmers compete. Sarah Petry (St. Benedict, PA/Cambria Heights) was the top finisher in the event for Penn State Altoona, placing fourth in the AMCC and seventh overall with a time of 19:21.55. That time represented a new Penn State Altoona women's swimming team record for Petry in the 1,650 Yard Freestyle, surpassing her own record time of 19:29.94 which she established during the Malone University Invitational on November 16-18, 2023.

In addition to Petry's performance in the 1,650 Yard Freestyle, Katie Chen (Jacksonville, FL/Creekside) took 10th place in the conference, clocking in at 21:08.27.

Penn State Altoona had four swimmers qualify to compete in finals for the next event, the 200 Yard Backstroke. McKenna Holl (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) made the cut for the 'A' final and finished in 2:22.46 to place sixth in the AMCC standings. Teah Sponsler (Halifax, PA/Halifax) won the 'B' final, posting a time of 2:20.29 to come in seventh in the AMCC. Emma Fraundorfer (Altoona, PA/Altoona) and Julia Daley (Langhorne, PA/Neshaminy) also swam in the 'B' final, with Fraundorfer placing 10th in the AMCC after finishing in 2:32.43 and Daley taking 11th in the conference with a time of 2:36.73.

Next was the 100 Yard Freestyle, where Madison Coleman (Altoona, PA/Tyrone) placed third in the AMCC and fifth overall by recording a time of 55.40 in the 'A' final. Ava Monborne (Ebensburg, PA/Central Cambria) followed by winning the 'B' group in that swim, finishing in 56.49 to come in seventh in the AMCC.

The 200 Yard Breaststroke was the night's next event, and the Lions had two swimmers qualify to compete in the 'B' final. Ayva Harris (Monroeville, PA/Gateway) had the second-fastest time in the 'B' group, finishing in 2:39.81 to place fifth in the AMCC. Isabella Rhoades (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone) clocked in at 2:54.40 to nab eighth place in the conference.

Penn State Altoona wrapped up the evening and the meet in the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay. In the 'A' final for that event, the team of Petry, Holl, Monborne, and Coleman had a total time of 3:48.41 to earn third place in the AMCC and fifth overall. In the 'B' final, Fraundorfer, Harris, Chen, and Sponsler came together to post a time of 4:00.59, finishing in seventh place in the AMCC.
