Women’s Swimming Defeats Lycoming 176-71 in Home Opener
ALTOONA, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona women's swimming team held its first home meet of the 2024-25 season on Friday evening, when the Lions took care of visiting non-conference opponent Lycoming College by a final score of 176-71 in the Adler Natatorium.
The Lions racked up 12 first place finishes in their fifth dual meet victory of the season. Emma Fraundorfer (Altoona, PA/Altoona), McKenna Holl (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin), and Teah Sponsler (Halifax, PA/Halifax) recorded two individual wins apiece.
Fraundorfer won the meet's first individual swim, the 50 Yard Freestyle, after clocking in at 27.03. Later, she took first in the 150 Yard Butterfly with a time of 1:54.07.
Holl's first win of the night came in the 100 Yard IM, during which she earned a time of 1:09.22. She later placed first in the 150 Yard Backstroke, finishing in 1:44.86.
Sponsler recorded a first place in the 50 Yard Backstroke, posting a time of 33.03. She picked up another win in the 100 Yard Butterfly, hitting the pad at 1:08.22.
Julia Daley (Langhorne, PA/Neshaminy) came in first place in the 50 Yard Butterfly with a time of 29.84, and Madison Coleman (Altoona, PA/Tyrone) topped the standings in the 100 Yard Backstroke after finishing in 1:08.58. Hailey Toth (Tamaqua, PA/Tamaqua) won the 100 Yard Breaststroke, recording a time of 1:14.81, and Ayva Harris (Monroeville, PA/Gateway) posted a time of 2:01.16 to place first in the 150 Yard Breaststroke.
Penn State Altoona also won both of the meet's relay events. In the opening event, the 200 Yard Medley Relay, the squad of Holl, Sarah Petry (St. Benedict, PA/Cambria Heights), Coleman, and Claire Smith (Hellertown, PA/Saucon Valley) compiled a time of 2:03.89 to take first place. The Lions capped the meet by winning the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay, in which the team of Holl, Alexis Buchala (Tamaqua, PA/Tamaqua), Toth, and Daley came together for a time of 1:52.09.
The Penn State Altoona women's swimming team will now break for the remainder of the semester, and the Lions will return to action on Friday, January 17, when the squad will play at home against Division II opponent Lock Haven University. The start time for that dual meet is scheduled for 6 p.m.
