
Women’s Swimming Starts AMCC Championships in Third Place
BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Penn State Altoona women's swimming team kicked off this week's four-day Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Championships on Wednesday evening at the Burt Flickinger Aquatic Center, finishing the day in third place with a team score of 58 points.
AMCC team Alfred State College and SUNYAC team SUNY-Cortland were tied for first place in the joint AMCC-SUNYAC meet standings with 90 points apiece. Penn State Behrend was third place overall and second in the AMCC with 84 points, and Pitt-Bradford rounded out the AMCC standings with 40 points, good for fourth in the AMCC and eighth overall.
Wednesday night's finals session consisted of two relay events.
Penn State Altoona started its night in the 200 Yard Medley Relay. In the 'A' final of that event, Julia Daley (Langhorne, PA/Neshaminy), Hailey Toth (Tamaqua, PA/Tamaqua), Madison Coleman (Altoona, PA/Tyrone), and McKenna Holl (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) compiled a total time of 1:57.15 to come in third in the AMCC and sixth overall. In the 'B' cut, Teah Sponsler (Halifax, PA/Halifax), Ayva Harris (Monroeville, PA/Gateway), Anna Heller (Huntingdon, PA/Huntingdon), and Claire Smith (Hellertown, PA/Saucon Valley) posted a time of 1:59.59 and took sixth place in the AMCC.
Next was the 800 Yard Freestyle Relay, where the squad of Alexis Buchala (Tamaqua, PA/Tamaqua), Heller, Smith, and Emma Fraundorfer (Altoona, PA/Altoona) combined for a time of 8:34.76 to place third in the AMCC and sixth in the overall standings.
Day two of the AMCC Championships is tomorrow, Thursday, February 20. Thursday's action starts with preliminaries at 10 a.m., and the day's finals session is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. and will consist of the 500 Yard Freestyle, 200 Yard IM, 50 Yard Freestyle, and 200 Yard Freestyle Relay.
