Women’s Tennis Edges Mount Aloysius 4-3 for First Win

EBENSBURG, Pa. – Penn State Altoona women's tennis capped its season-opening weekend on Sunday with a 4-3 victory over Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Mount Aloysius College at the Ebensburg Tennis Center.

Penn State Altoona (1-1, 1-1 AMCC) split in a pair of doubles matches, then won three out of five in singles play to secure its first win of the 2021 season.

In No. 1 doubles, the pair of Jessica Stevens (Altoona, PA/Altoona)/Katie Kruza (York, PA/Central York) picked up an 8-2 win, but Mount Aloysius (0-1, 0-1 AMCC) got an 8-6 win in No. 2 doubles to tie the match score at one point apiece.

But Penn State Altoona's three singles wins were enough to propel it past their conference opponent to win the day. Stevens posted a 6-0, 6-0 victory in the No. 1 match, improving to 2-0 on the season. Victoria Acker (Cresson, PA/Penn Cambria) earned her first singles win of the spring, clinching a 6-3, 6-1 decision over her opponent in the No. 2 spot. Jenna Bartlett (Bellwood, PA/Bellwood-Antis) won a third-set tiebreaker in her No. 5 singles match to pick up her first collegiate victory, 4-6, 6-4, 11-9.

The teams did not compete in the No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles matches.

Penn State Altoona women's tennis returns to action on Sunday, March 21, traveling to face AMCC opponent Pitt-Greensburg at 1:00 p.m.
