Women’s Tennis Improves to 2-0 with 7-2 Win at Waynesburg

WAYNESBURG, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona women's tennis team wrapped up its season-opening weekend road trip with another win, defeating non-conference opponent Waynesburg University 7-2 on Sunday afternoon.

Penn State Altoona (2-0) won all the matches it competed in, yielding just two points to Waynesburg (0-1) via forfeits in the No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles spots.

In doubles, Penn State Altoona staked out a 2-1 lead with wins in the No. 1 and 2 matches. In No. 1 doubles, the duo of Mikhaela Merca (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin)/Caitlin Blessel (Saint Marys, PA/Saint Marys) shut out their opponents by an 8-0 decision. In the No. 2 match, the team of Lauren Stich (Ellwood City, PA/Lincoln)/Rachel Stricek (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone) handled their opponents by an 8-3 final score.

Penn State Altoona took care of business in the No. 1 through 5 singles matches to earn a comfortable, five-point victory over the Yellow Jackets.

Merca defeated her opponent 6-0, 6-3 in the No. 1 spot, and Blessel followed with a 6-2, 6-0 victory in the No. 2 match. Stricek earned a 6-2, 6-0 victory in No. 3 singles, and Isabella Rhoades (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone) won 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 4 slot in the lineup. Stich completed the Lions' lineup with a 6-1, 6-0 win in No. 5 singles.

Next, Penn State Altoona comes back to campus for its first home match of the season, as the Lions will take on non-conference opponent Saint Vincent College this upcoming Wednesday, September 6 at 4 p.m. at the Adler Courts.
