Women’s Tennis Downed in Home Opener

ALTOONA, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona women's tennis team suffered its first loss of the season on Wednesday, when the Lions were defeated 7-2 in their home opener at the Adler Tennis Courts by non-conference opponent Saint Vincent College.

St. Vincent (1-0) won two out of three in doubles play to start the match with a one-point lead. Penn State Altoona (2-1) salvaged a point in the No. 1 spot, where the duo of Mikhaela Merca (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin)/Caitlin Blessel (Saint Marys, PA/Saint Marys) earned an 8-4 victory.

The Bearcats proceeded to win five of six in singles play, takin home a five-point win over the Lions. Penn State Altoona picked up its second point in the No. 2 singles match, where Blessel earned a 6-4, 6-1 triumph.

Penn State Altoona returns to action on Friday, September 15 for its first Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference match of the fall, when the Lions will host league opponent Penn State Behrend at 4 p.m.
