Women’s Tennis Sweeps Waynesburg for Second Win

ALTOONA, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona women's tennis team finished off its season-opening homestand with another win on Sunday afternoon, when the Lions blanked non-conference opponent Waynesburg University 7-0 at the Adler Tennis Courts.

Penn State Altoona (2-0) won all three doubles matches, then reeled off six points by winning all of the singles matches over Waynesburg (0-1).

Penn State Altoona swept doubles play to secure the opening point in the match, as all three of the Lions' doubles teams picked up their second wins of the season. The pairs of Caitlin Blessel (Saint Marys, PA/Saint Marys)/Sienna Fell (Canonsburg, PA/Canon-McMillan) and Rachel Stricek (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone)/Abigail Morgan (Orrville, OH/Orrville) both won by scores of 6-0 in the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, respectively. In No. 3 doubles, Lexi Colaianni (Pittsburgh, PA/Kiski Area)/Daniel Fulton (Milford, DE/Milford) came together for a 6-2 victory.

In singles, Blessel picked up her first win of the season with a 6-1, 6-0 victory in the No. 1 spot, and Stricek also produced a 6-1, 6-0 win in the No. 2 match for her second triumph of the season. Fell earned her second victory in a tightly contested No. 3 singles match, in which she prevailed 7-6 (7-3), 7-5.

Morgan, Fulton, and Colaianni also recorded their second singles wins of the season in the next three matches. Morgan earned a 6-1, 6-2 decision over her opponent at No. 4, Fulton claimed a 6-2, 6-0 victory in the No. 5 match, and Colaianni came out on top by a score of 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6.

Next up, the Lions will travel for their first road match of the season, as the squad will head to Washington, Pa. on Wednesday, September 4, to face non-conference foe Washington & Jefferson College at 6 p.m.
