Women’s Tennis Defeats DII Lock Haven, 6-1

ALTOONA, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona women's tennis team got back in the win column Sunday afternoon, when the Lions posted a 6-1 victory over Division II opponent Lock Haven University at the Gorilla House Gym.

Penn State Altoona (6-5) won all three doubles matches to secure the opening point of the match, and the Lions proceeded to win five out of six in singles play to defeat Lock Haven (1-3) by five points on the day.

In doubles, the pair of Caitlin Blessel (Saint Marys, PA/Saint Marys)/Rachel Stricek (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone) prevailed 6-3 in the No. 1 match for their second victory together this season. Sienna Fell (Canonsburg, PA/Canon-McMillan)/Abigail Morgan (Orrville, OH/Orrville) picked up their third win together this season with a 6-4 triumph in the No. 2 spot. In the No. 3 doubles match, Daniel Fulton (Milford, DE/Milford)/Lexi Colaianni (Pittsburgh, PA/Kiski Area) pulled out a 7-5 victory for their team-leading sixth win together.

The Lions carried their momentum into singles play, where Penn State Altoona won in the two through six spots to finish with a comfortable margin over Lock Haven. Stricek secured her seventh singles victory of the season with a convincing 6-1, 6-0 decision over her opponent in the No. 2 match, and Fell got win number four with a 6-4, 7-5 triumph in the No. 3 match. Morgan battled in the No. 4 match, where she pulled out a hard-fought tiebreak win to nab her fifth victory of the year, 6-2, 4-6, 13-11. Fulton won 6-4, 6-2 in the No. 5 spot for their seventh win, and Colaianni posted a lopsided 6-0, 6-1 victory in the No. 6 match for her team-best ninth singles win.

Next up, Penn State Altoona women's tennis travels to Huntingdon, Pa., to face non-conference opponent Juniata College on Tuesday, October 1, at 4 p.m.
