Women’s Tennis Blanks Tomcats; Colaianni Sets Single-Season Wins Record

ALTOONA, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona women's tennis team hosted its final home match of the 2024-25 season on Sunday afternoon, when the Lions defeated non-conference opponent Thiel College 7-0 at the Gorilla House Gym.

In the Lions' victory, sophomore Lexi Colaianni (Pittsburgh, PA/Kiski Area) won her 14th singles match of the season to establish a new Penn State Altoona women's tennis program record for the most singles wins in a season. Her record-setting victory propelled her past the previous record of 13 wins in a season, which was set by former Lion Jessica Stevens in 2018.

Penn State Altoona (9-11) closed out its home schedule in dominant fashion, winning all three doubles and all six singles matches to shut out Thiel (2-11). The Lions surrendered just six games to the Tomcats in a combined 15 sets of singles and doubles play.

In the No. 1 doubles match, the tandem of Rachel Stricek (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone)/Sienna Fell (Canonsburg, PA/Canon-McMillan) earned their first win together with a 6-1 decision over their opponents. The pair of Mara Del Valle (Colombia/Walt Whitman)/Daniel Fulton (Milford, DE/Milford) prevailed 6-1 in the No. 2 doubles match for their first victory, and the duo of Lydia Um (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg)/Chelsea Napper (Highlands Ranch, CO/Highlands Ranch) picked up their first win with a 6-0 triumph at No. 3.

The Lions' control of the match continued in singles play. Stricek earned her 10th singles win of the season with a 6-0, 6-0 victory in the No. 1 match, and Caitlin Blessel (Saint Marys, PA/Saint Marys) also posted a 6-0, 6-0 result in the No. 2 spot for her fourth win. Fell came out on top of her No. 3 singles match by a 6-0, 6-2 decision for her sixth victory of the year, and Abigail Morgan (Orrville, OH/Orrville) won her ninth singles match of the season with a 6-0, 6-1 triumph at No. 4. Colaianni blanked her opponent 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 5 singles match for her team record-setting 14th win, and Casey Burinskas (Derry, NH/Pinkerton Academy) nabbed her second win of the season with a 6-1, 6-0 victory in the No. 6 match.

Penn State Altoona women's tennis will close its 2024-25 season on the road, as the Lions will travel to South Williamsport, Pa., to take on non-conference opponent Penn College on Friday, April 25, at 4 p.m.
