
Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Wilson
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona women's volleyball team got back in the win column Tuesday night, when the Lions defeated non-conference opponent Wilson College 3-0 in the Gannett Memorial Field House.
Penn State Altoona (2-3) posted a lopsided win over Wilson (0-3), prevailing over the Phoenix by set scores of 25-14, 25-18, and 25-16. 15 different players saw action for the Lions in the victory.
Lia Simanski (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) had a match-high 11 points on 10 kills and a service ace to go along with nine digs. Makenna Port (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) scored 10 points on eight kills, two block assists, and a solo block, and Maggie Brewer (NuMine, PA/West Shamokin) also recorded 10 points on nine kills and a pair of block assists. Ella Hadley (Spring Mills, PA/Penns Valley) added seven points on six kills and an ace, and she also had nine digs.
Julia Emel (Woodward, PA/Penns Valley) led all players in the match with 15 assists, tied for the match-high in service aces with three, and tied for the team lead in digs with 10. Madelyn Rockwell (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone) contributed 14 assists while serving up two aces.
Anna Batrus (Altoona, PA/Altoona) matched the team-high total of digs with 10.
In the opening set, Penn State Altoona used a big run midway through to turn a one-point lead into a commanding 10-point advantage. Up 8-7, the Lions embarked on an 11-2 run that included kills from Hadley, Brewer, and Simanski, as well as aces from Emel, Hadley, and Taylor Myers (Morrisdale, PA/West Branch). Wilson scored the next four points, but Penn State Altoona ended the set on a 6-1 run, getting a solo block from Port to end the set at 25-14.
The Lions found themselves in a 3-0 hole to start the second set, but they scored the next four points to jump ahead. Kills from Port, Jadeyn Price (Altoona, PA/Altoona), and Hadley helped Penn State Altoona to a five-point lead, 12-7, in the middle stages of the set, and another kill by Price later made it 22-13. The Lions picked up their final three points on a trio of Wilson miscues, and Penn State Altoona established a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-18 victory in set two.
Penn State Altoona again found itself down by three, 4-1, to start the third set, but kills from Simanski, Port, Hadley, and Price helped get the Lions in front by one, 6-5. After a Wilson point, the Lions rattled off seven consecutive points, including two Brewer kills and an Emel kill and ace to create a 13-6 advantage. Later, another Emel ace put Penn State Altoona's lead at eight, 22-14. Two points later, the Lions scored three in a row to end the match, as two Brewer kills and a Wilson attack error concluded the set at 25-16 to clinch a sweep for Penn State Altoona.
Penn State Altoona women's volleyball returns to the road for its next matches this upcoming weekend, when the Lions will compete in the Shenandoah University Tournament on Friday, September 6, and Saturday, September 7. On Friday, Penn State Altoona will face McDaniel College at 5:30 p.m., and the Lions take on Shenandoah and Hood College on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., respectively.
