Women’s Wrestling Debuts at ESU Open

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona women's wrestling team made its program debut at the East Stroudsburg Open on Sunday. Five Penn State Altoona wrestlers took to the mats in four weight classes, representing women wrestling at the varsity level for the first time in Penn State Altoona Athletics history.

Angelina Grieb (Julian, PA/Bald Eagle) had a successful debut for the Lions in the 160 bracket. After dropping her opening round bout, Grieb won three matches in the consolation bracket, going 3-2 on the day. In the consolation round of 16, Grieb defeated Cedar Crest's Drayden Charman by a fall in the second period, before eliminating Fabiana Josa of New Jersey City University by a 10-0 decision. Grieb then eliminated Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's Layla Soto by virtue of her second fall of the day.

At 207, Aja'nai Jumper (Carlisle, PA/Cumberland Valley) defeated East Stroudsburg's Tiarra Guan 7-2 in the opening round of 16, before succumbing to Elmira's Tyana Labady due to injury sustained in her opening bout.

Dropping their opening matches of the season were Maya Barrios (Portland, OR/Beaverton) at 124, Camryn Steinbuch (Bedford, PA/Bedford) at 160, and Kiara Luna at 180, each going 0-2 on the day.

The Penn State Altoona women's wrestling team returns to action on Sunday, November 17, as they head to Millersville, Pa., to compete in the Millersville Open. The Lions will travel to Buffalo State later this month, wrapping up the opening semester of competition. They will then host Alvernia University for the first home match of the season, Monday, January 20 at 1:30 p.m.
