Women’s Wrestling Takes Sixth at Millersville Open
MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona women's wrestling team returned to the mats on Sunday for its second event of the 2024-25 season, taking part in the Millersville University Open at the Student Memorial Center.
Penn State Altoona had its best showing of the young season, scoring 36.5 points as a team and placing sixth out of 16 scoring teams. Four of the Lions' five wrestlers placed in their respective brackets.
At 207, Aja'nai Jumper (Carlisle, PA/Cumberland Valley) posted a 7-0 victory by fall in her first match of the day in the quarterfinals, pinning Waynesburg University's Ja'Khia Matthews. Jumper suffered a loss in the semifinal round of her bracket, going down 5-0 to Alvernia University's Peyton Fries, but she bounced back to ultimately finish in third place in the 207 bracket, posting a 10-0 tech victory over Bethany College's Sophie Diaz.
At 160, Angelina Grieb (Julian, PA/Bald Eagle) took fourth place and Camryn Steinbuch (Bedford, PA/Bedford) came in sixth place.
Grieb started her day with a pair of wins, taking down Alvernia's Molly Winters 6-0 and edging Muhlenberg University's Kelsey Gelb 9-8, both by decison. After that, she suffered a 4-0 loss to Bethany's Trinity Barrus in the semifinal round, then took a 6-2 loss to Gelb in the third-place bout.
Steinbuch opened her day with a victory by injury in the first round, then posted a 4-0 win by decision over Muhlenberg's Julianna Fiorello in the quarterfinals. Sussex's Sophia Lombardo defeated Steinbuch in the semifinals, before she went down 8-0 to Gelb in the consolation semifinals to place sixth in the weight class.
In the 124 bracket, Maya Barrios (Portland, OR/Beaverton) came in fourth place. After a bye in the opening round, she got past Alvernia's Danielle Ferrara in the quarterfinals before losing 4-0 to Felician University's Liliana Zaku-Ramos in the semifinals. Barrios bounced back to post a 4-0 decision over Cedar Crest College's Arianna Gonzalez in the consolation semifinals, before she ultimately lost in the third-place bout with Kate Zavuholnik.
Kiara Luna (Miami, FL/Digital Academy of Florida) competed in the 180 weight class bracket, falling 4-0 in the first round to Kimberlee Hechler before bowing out after a loss to Delaware Valley's Gabby Reid in the consolation round of four.
Next up, Penn State Altoona women's wrestling will hold its home opener on Monday, January 20, at 1:30 p.m. against non-conference opponent Alvernia University.
