Late Goal Pushes Presidents Past Lions

WASHINGTON, Pa. – Washington & Jefferson College broke a scoreless tie with a penalty kick goal late in the second half of Saturday afternoon's game with the Penn State Altoona men's soccer team, sinking the Lions 1-0 at Alexandre Stadium.

A foul in the box in the 79th minute of play gave W&J (2-1) a penalty kick, and Logen Mackey converted it into a goal to give the Presidents a 1-0 advantage. That score stood up the rest of the way, and Penn State Altoona (0-3) was handed a tough loss.

Sasha Mohoruk (State College, PA/State College) made the start at goalkeeper for Penn State Altoona and recorded seven saves.

Colin Murphy (State College, PA/State College) pulled the trigger on three shots, putting one on goal. Niko Ferrales (Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ/Northern Highlands Regional) also had a shot on goal for the Lions, while Matias Harte (Knoxville, TN/State College) and Bailey Musselman (Altoona, PA/Altoona) also attempted shots.

Penn State Altoona held the fort during the first half, when W&J posted a 13-2 advantage in shots. Mohoruk made four of his seven saves in the opening half, with he and the Lions' defense combining to keep the Presidents off of the scoreboard.

The game remained scoreless until the latter stages of the second half, when Mackey tucked a penalty kick just inside the left post at 78:40 to put the Presidents in front. Penn State Altoona attempted two shots in the closing minutes of the game, but the Lions came up emptyhanded, as W&J sealed the win.

Penn State Altoona men's soccer returns to the road for its next game, this Thursday, September 12. The Lions will travel to Westmoreland County to face Saint Vincent College in a matchup starting at 7 p.m.
