Men’s Soccer Rallies for First AMCC Win on Senior Day
ALTOONA, Pa. – In its final home game of the 2024 season, the Penn State Altoona men's soccer team overcame a one-goal halftime deficit to defeat Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Carlow University 2-1 at Spring Run Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
Penn State Altoona honored its five senior players in a pregame Senior Day ceremony, recognizing goalkeeper Sasha Mohoruk (State College, PA/State College), defenders Owen Myers (Spring Grove, PA/Spring Grove) and David Ogoh (Abuja, Nigeria/Cherryfield College), and defender/midfielders Jonathan Hill (Spring Grove, PA/Spring Grove) and Bailey Musselman (Altoona, PA/Altoona).
Trailing 1-0 at the intermission, Penn State Altoona (2-9, 1-5 AMCC) got second-half goals from Aaron Lamy-Ramsden (Trinidad and Tobago/St. Benedict's College) and Andrew Ream (Julian, PA/Bald Eagle) to surge ahead. The Lions finished with a season-high 21 shot attempts as a team, while limiting Carlow (3-11, 0-6 AMCC) to just one shot on goal and three total attempts.
Carlow drew first blood at 27:02, when a Penn State Altoona foul in the box gave the Celtics' Hunter Brady a penalty shot opportunity. Brady converted, finding the back of the net on a shot into the lower right part of the goal to give Carlow a 1-0 lead.
The visitors nursed their one-goal advantage through the rest of the period, and Penn State Altoona went into halftime down by one.
But the Lions turned up the pressure in the second half, during which the home squad outshot Carlow by a 15-0 margin.
The attack paid off in the 55th minute, when Penn State Altoona netted its first home goal of the season. Colin Murphy (State College, PA/State College) sent a free kick from the right side of the field into the box, where Lamy-Ramsden headed the ball past the keeper at 54:15 to tie the score at 1-1.
Penn State Altoona jumped in front in the 78th minute, when a near miss led to a goal. Matias Harte (State College, PA/State College) pulled the trigger on a shot from the right side of the box, and it hit the crossbar and deflected straight down, where Ream was there to tap it in and give his team a 2-1 advantage at 77:50.
The goals by Lamy-Ramsden and Ream were the first of their collegiate careers, while Murphy's assist was his first collegiate point.
Penn State Altoona maintained its lead for the rest of the game, clinching its first AMCC victory of the season, as well as its first home win of the fall.
Mohoruk made his 11th start at goalkeeper for Penn State Altoona and picked up his second win of the season.
Harte led all players in the game with five shot attempts, including one shot on goal. Niko Ferrales (Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ/Northern Highlands Regional) had four shot attempts, with one on goal, and Ethan Firth (York, PA/Central York) recorded three attempts, putting one on target. Lamy-Ramsden had a game-high two shots on goal, and Ream had two attempts with one shot on goal.
The Lions finished the day with a 21-3 lead over Carlow in shots attempted, a 6-1 advantage in shots on goal, and a 7-1 edge in corner kicks.
