Women’s Soccer Blanks La Roche for First Win

ALTOONA, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona women's soccer team got in the win column on Tuesday night, when the Lions started their Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference schedule with a 1-0 shutout of visiting La Roche University at Spring Run Stadium.

Penn State Altoona (1-6-1, 1-0 AMCC) got a first-half goal from Bridget Martin (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) and made its lead stand up the rest of the way, while limiting La Roche (2-8, 0-2 AMCC) to just three shots on goal.

Adeline Baustert (Apollo, PA/Apollo-Ridge) made three saves at goalkeeper for Penn State Altoona to record her second shutout of the season and first victory.

Rachel Rutkowski (Canonsburg, PA/Canon-McMillan) totaled two shots on goal while attempting three total shots, and she also assisted on the Lions' lone goal. Mallorie Smith (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) pulled the trigger on six shots, putting one on goal. Taylor Frederick (Mifflinburg, PA/Mifflinburg), Nicole Schwartz (Clifton, NJ/Passaic County Technical Institute), and Martin also had one shot on goal apiece.

The Lions put the game's first goal on the board just under three minutes into the first half. Rutkowski's close-range shot was saved by the La Roche keeper but deflected right to Martin, who fired it home at 2:53. The score was Martin's second goal of the season, giving Penn State Altoona the early lead.

Penn State Altoona controlled possession for much of the half and took their 1-0 advantage into the intermission. The Lions ended the first half with an 8-4 lead over La Roche in shot attempts, including leading 4-1 in shots on goal.

The Lions rode their 1-0 lead through the second half, keeping the Redhawks off of the scoreboard over the rest of the contest. Penn State Altoona outshot the visitors 6-4 in the second half.

The Lions finished the night with a 14-8 advantage in shots attempted and a 6-3 lead in shots on goal, while corner kicks were tied 4-4 between the two squads.

Penn State Altoona women's soccer remains at home for its next game, as the Lions will host AMCC opponent Alfred State College this Saturday, October 5, at 4:15 p.m. The date also marks Senior Day for the program, and the team will recognize its senior players in a pregame ceremony.
