Women’s Soccer Ties Alfred State 0-0 in Senior Day Game

ALTOONA, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona women's soccer team continued Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference play at home on Saturday, when the Lions settled for a 0-0 draw with conference opponent Alfred State College at Spring Run Stadium.

Prior to the game, the Lions recognized their five senior players: goalkeeper Adeline Baustert (Apollo, PA/Apollo-Ridge), defender/midfielder Amanda Hazel (Clearfield, PA/Clearfield), defender Hannah Brubaker (San Diego, CA/Scripps Ranch), midfielder Sophia Nelson (Bellwood, PA/Bellwood-Antis), and defender/midfielder Sarah Schulz (Harrisburg, PA/Susquehanna Township).

After the Senior Day ceremony, Penn State Altoona (1-6-2, 1-0-1 AMCC) found itself locked in an evenly fought contest with Alfred State (3-5-3, 1-0-2 AMCC) that resulted in no goals being scored.

Penn State Altoona had the bulk of the scoring chances in the first half, during which the Lions outshot the visitors by a 10-4 margin. The home team's best chance came in the 13th minute, when a close-range shot by Nelson was denied, keeping Penn State Altoona off of the scoreboard.

Alfred State posted a slim 6-5 lead in shots during the second half, when the Pioneers had five of their six shots on goal. Both teams created several scoring opportunities, only to have them stifled by the opposing defensive units.

By game's end, Penn State Altoona had a 15-10 lead in shots attempted, while Alfred State led in shots on goal, 6-4. The Lions also held a strong 7-0 advantage over the Pioneers in corner kicks.

Baustert notched her ninth start of the season at goalkeeper for Penn State Altoona, recording her third shutout of the season and second in as many games. She stopped six Alfred State shots to hold the visitors scoreless.

Mallorie Smith (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) led all players in the game with six shots attempted, while Hazel, Emilee Roman (Davidsville, PA/Conemaugh Township), and Rachel Rutkowski (Canonsburg, PA/Canon-McMillan) each attempted two shots. Hazel, Nelson, Roman, and Smith accounted for the Lions' four shots on goal.

Next up, Penn State Altoona women's soccer will play its first AMCC road game of the season on Wednesday, October 9, when the Lions will travel to face conference foe Pitt-Greensburg at 4 p.m.
