Late Goal Propels Women’s Soccer to Win in Regular Season Finale
ALTOONA, Pa. – Thanks to a goal in the 81st minute, the Penn State Altoona women's soccer team closed out its regular season with a 1-0 victory over Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Mount Aloysius College on Tuesday evening at Spring Run Stadium.
Prior to the game, Penn State Altoona recognized its fifth-year senior, forward/midfielder Mallorie Smith (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte), on her standout career with the program.
In an evenly-contested battle in which both teams remained scoreless deep into the second half, Jordan Yalestko (Philadelphia, PA/Philadelphia Academy Charter) came up with the go-ahead goal for Penn State Altoona (5-8-2, 5-2-1 AMCC) with under 10 minutes to play. Meanwhile, the Lions shut down the Mount Aloysius (4-10-2, 3-4-1 AMCC) attack, holding the visitors to just eight shot attempts and three shots on goal.
Yaletsko had the game's lone score and finished with two shots on goal, while Bridget Martin (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) and Kylei Martin (Mifflinburg, PA/Mifflinburg) each picked up an assist. Smith led all players in the game with five shot attempts and three shots on goal, and Emilee Roman (Davidsville, PA/Conemaugh Township) and Rachel Rutkowski (Canonsburg, PA/Canon-McMillan) also had one shot on goal apiece.
Adeline Baustert (Apollo, PA/Apollo-Ridge), in her 15th start of the season at goalkeeper for Penn State Altoona, earned her fifth win and fifth shutout of the fall while making three saves.
The first half featured plenty of up-and-down play, but just three shots on goal. Smith had the night's first two shots on target, before a Mount Aloysius shot in the 41st minute was stopped by Baustert. The Lions finished the period with a slight 6-4 lead in shot attempts, and the teams went into halftime without a goal.
The Mounties started the second half with a pair of scoring opportunities, but came up emptyhanded after a pair of saves by Baustert. Penn State Altoona began to shift the momentum into its favor midway through the period, and the Lions eventually managed to break through for the game's first goal.
In the 81st minute, Kylei Martin headed the ball forward to Bridget Martin, who sent a one-touch pass to the right for Yaletsko. Yaletsko pulled the trigger on a shot from 20 yards at the top of the box, beating the keeper to her left at 80:29 to put Penn State Altoona on the board, 1-0.
The Lions held Mount Aloysius without a shot attempt the rest of the way, clinching the tight, one-goal victory over their nearby conference rival.
With its win, Penn State Altoona wrapped up the No. 3 seed in the upcoming AMCC postseason tournament. The Lions will play a home game in the first round of the tournament this Saturday, November 2, against No. 6 seed Alfred State College. Start time for that contest has been set for 2 p.m.
