Women’s Soccer Edged 2-1 in AMCC Semifinal
GREENSBURG, Pa. – The No. 3 seed Penn State Altoona women's soccer team held a halftime lead in Wednesday night's Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Tournament semifinal game at Hempfield High School, but No. 2 seed Pitt-Greensburg rallied to defeat the Lions 2-1.
Penn State Altoona (6-9-2) scored the first goal of the evening less than 10 minutes into the game, and the Lions held their lead through the intermission. But Pitt-Greensburg (12-3-4) came back with two goals in the second half to sink Penn State Altoona.
Mallorie Smith (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) scored her team-leading ninth goal of the season for the Lions, and Erin McCarrie (Blackwood, NJ/Paul VI) picked up her first assist.
Adeline Baustert (Apollo, PA/Apollo-Ridge) made her 17th start of the season at goalkeeper for Penn State Altoona and made seven saves in the loss.
Penn State Altoona struck first in the ninth minute. After a throw in from the sideline, the ball deflected back to McCarrie, who booted a long kick toward the Pitt-Greensburg box. The kick found Smith, who split a pair of Bobcat defenders and beat the keeper at 8:29 to make it 1-0.
Baustert made four saves throughout the first half to keep the Bobcats off the scoreboard, and Penn State Altoona went into halftime with a 1-0 advantage.
Pitt-Greensburg turned up the heat in the second half, during which the Bobcats held a 12-2 advantage in shot attempts. Baustert made two more stops midway through the period to keep the home team at bay, but in the 74th minute, a foul in the box by Penn State Altoona led to a penalty kick for Pitt-Greensburg. The Bobcats' Sarah Tonkovich fired her shot into the goal at 73:26, knotting the score at 1-1.
Pitt-Greensburg took its first lead of the night just 6:29 later. Reese Walker's pass in the box found Maya Wertelet, who sent a shot into the bottom right corner of the goal at 79:55 to put the Bobcats ahead, 2-1.
Penn State Altoona was unable to come up with the tying score in the final 10 minutes, and the Lions ended with a tough playoff loss.
Pitt-Greensburg finished the game with a 20-6 lead in shots attempted, including a 9-3 advantage in shots on goal. Corner kicks were tied 7-7 between the teams.
Smith attempted three shots, putting two on goal. Rachel Rutkowski (Canonsburg, PA/Canon-McMillan) also had a shot on goal for the Lions, and Taylor Frederick (Mifflinburg, PA/Mifflinburg) and Sophia Nelson (Bellwood, PA/Bellwood-Antis) attempted one shot apiece.
