NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - A big offensive outburst from Westminster College proved to be too much for the Penn State Altoona men's soccer team on Wednesday night, when the Lions lost 7-3 in their non-conference game against the Titans.

Antonio Mandell (Broomall, PA/Marple Newtown), Ben Jago (Allentown, PA/Parkland), and Seth Murrelle (Sayre, PA/Sayre) were the goal scorers for Penn State Altoona (0-3). Tanner Yaw (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra) made four saves between the pipes for the Lions.

Both teams combined for seven goals in a first half marked by back-and-forth scoring chances.

Westminster (1-1-1) struck first at 10:55, when Zack Walters' penalty kick goal put his team up 1-0.

But Penn State Altoona responded just under seven minutes later to tie the game. Following a corner kick, Mandell found the back of the net at 17:37 for his first collegiate goal to make it 1-1. Deontae Mosley (Houston, TX/Hylton) picked up the assist on the score for his first collegiate point.

A corner kick led to Westminster grabbing the lead back at 23:19. The Titans' Ahmed Cisse set up Nick Iregui, who scored on a shot from the top half of the box to give his team a 2-1 advantage.

Less than one minute later, the Lions answered to tie the score at 2-2. Jago notched his first goal of the season at 24:37, beating the keeper from six yards out on the left side of the box.

Westminster jumped ahead at 29:11, when Cisse's strike from 25 yards out gave the Titans a 3-2 lead. The home squad increased its lead to 4-2 at 31:21, when Walters scored his second goal of the game on a shot from 30 yards.

Murrelle narrowed Penn State Altoona's deficit to one shortly before halftime, recording his second goal of the season. The senior fired a shot that deflected off of a Westminster defender and into the net to bring the Lions to within 4-3 at the 42:35 mark.

But Westminster extended its lead in the second half, winning the period 3-0 with a pair of early goals and another one late.

Shane Fallen's shot from the left sideline beat the goalkeeper to make it 5-3 at 58:28, and Cisse scored on a one-touch shot from inside the box at 59:25 to help his team to a 6-3 lead. Jon Clark's goal at 80:35 extended the Titans' advantage to 7-3.

Westminster led 27-14 in total shots, including holding an 11-7 lead in shots on goal. Penn State Altoona held a 3-2 lead in corner kicks on the night.

Lions soccer returns to action this Saturday, September 9, when the team will host Shenandoah University for a 3:30 p.m. contest at Spring Run Stadium.

Notes: With his goal tonight, Murrelle moved into sole possession of sixth place on the Lions' all-time goals scored list with 16 in his collegiate career.
